Full enforcement of the updated requirements will begin on November 2, 2026.
Residents and property owners are encouraged to review the updated requirements and ensure compliance prior to the enforcement date.

RE: Adopted Ordinance 246-2 – Containerized Garbage Can Requirements
Dear Resident/Property Owner,
In an effort to address concerns related to the storage and collection of household garbage, the Town of Boonton has approved amendments to Chapter 246, Solid Waste, which include new requirements for the use of containerized garbage cans.
The amended ordinance was adopted and became effective August 17, 2026. However, full enforcement will not begin until November 2, 2026. During this transition period, Town inspections will primarily focus on educating residents and property owners by providing information regarding the new requirements.
Under the revised ordinance:
•All garbage must be placed inside an approved garbage can with a tight-fitting lid.
•Individual garbage cans may not exceed 30 pounds when filled.
•A typical single-family household is permitted up to two (2) garbage cans per collection day, with collection occurring twice per week.
•Garbage bags may not be placed directly at the curb or otherwise left exposed for collection. (exceptions will be made for additional bags with a purchased sticker for excess garbage as per 246-3)
Over the coming weeks, Town inspectors will be identifying properties that may not be in compliance with the revised requirements and contacting property owners regarding any corrections that may be necessary. The goal during this period is education and voluntary compliance prior to the November 2nd enforcement date.
These requirements are intended to help maintain a cleaner, safer, and healthier Boonton by ensuring that household garbage is properly contained prior to collection. Properly secured garbage also helps prevent bags from being ripped open by animals, which can create unsanitary conditions, litter, odors, and additional cleanup concerns.
