Nobody likes you when you’re dropping the black flag.

Nobody likes you when you’re making the call they don’t agree with.

Nobody likes you when that yellow comes out and ruins the run you were waiting all night to see.

And sometimes, nobody likes you simply because they saw something from the grandstands that looked a whole lot different from what you saw from the fence.

But that’s the thing about racing…

Every flag has a purpose. Every call has a reason. And while we’re watching the cars, they’re watching everything else — the track, the drivers, the conditions, the incidents, the things happening in places we may never even see.

We need the officials.

Their eyes have to stay on the track when ours are following our favorite car.

They have to make the call when there isn’t time to stop and ask what everyone else thinks.

And when safety is at the core of what you do, sometimes the right call isn’t the popular one.

We may cheer when the checkered flag falls.

We may groan when the yellow comes out.

We may question the black flag.

But from the first green to the final checkered, there are people standing around that track whose job is to help make sure everyone gets to race another night.

So tonight, Her View is for the ones behind the scenes and along the fence line…

The ones watching when we’re cheering.

The ones making the calls when we’re arguing.

The ones we don’t always notice until we disagree with them.

Because racing wouldn’t be racing without the people who keep the track moving — and keep safety at the center of it all.

We may not always like the call.

We may not always understand the decision.

But without them, we wouldn’t have the sport we love.

So maybe this weekend, instead of questioning the call…

we say thank you for being there to make it. 🏁
