Mount Rainier in October? 🍂 Here’s what we’d know before heading out.

Fall is a wonderful time to explore the mountain, with colorful forests, waterfalls, cooler temperatures, and the possibility of fresh snow up high.

A few tips for planning your visit:

📍 Start at the Nisqually Entrance. Near Ashford, this route takes you through Longmire and toward Paradise, weather permitting.

🥾 Take a walk at Longmire. The 0.7-mile Trail of the Shadows loop is a great place to enjoy the forest at a slower pace.

💦 Make time for the waterfalls. Christine Falls and Narada Falls are two beautiful stops along the road toward Paradise.

🏔️ Prepare for changing conditions. October can bring rain, freezing temperatures, and snow at higher elevations. Pack warm layers, waterproof shoes, and offline maps.

🚐 Plan your overnight stay. Mount Rainier’s park campgrounds have closed for the 2026 season, so arrange RV camping outside the park. Overnight sleeping in park parking lots isn’t permitted.

One more thing: Sunrise Road is closed to vehicles, and access to Paradise can change with the weather. Always check the National Park Service’s current road conditions before departing.

Get there before they do. One of the best things about traveling by RV is having the freedom to start the day on your own schedule — and sometimes that means setting the alarm a little earlier, making the coffee, and getting on the road while everyone else is still waking up. Those quiet morning hours can give you the best light, the clearest views, and a completely different experience of a place.

There’s something pretty special about pulling up to a view like this and feeling like, for a little while, you have it almost all to yourself. That’s the kind of morning we think is always worth the early start.

Thank you to everyone who trusted us with a family vacation, a national park trip, an anniversary, a first RV experience, or simply a few good days on the road.

And a huge thank you to our super dedicated Bozeman team, who work nearly 24/7 for the whole five-month season: Jeff, Cindee, Morgan, Miranda, Bruce, the Onouye brothers, and all the countless others who made it such a successful season.

If you’ve never rented an RV before, you’re in good company. A lot of Blacksford travelers are on their first trip.

Six steps, start to finish. Your van is out front rather than at the end of a queue. It was stocked before you arrived — bedding, cookware, camp chairs.

You meet the people who prepped it, and they walk you through water, power, heat, the waste tanks and the bed. There is no clock on it — they stay until you feel confident behind the wheel.

Lauren took Blacksford south to Zion, where fall is starting to settle into the canyon.

Cool mornings, comfortable hiking weather, and plenty of time to pull over when something looks worth stopping for.

That’s one of the best parts of traveling this way: you can have a plan without having to stick to every minute of it.

Park the RV, spend the day on the trails, come back for dinner, and do it all again somewhere new the next morning.
