Mountain driving qualifies as severe service, whether or not anyone ever told you that.

Every climb up 26, every long descent back into the valley, every switchback where the engine never settles into a steady cruise. That is precisely the pattern engineers classify as harder on oil than flat highway miles. Heat cycles arrive faster. The oil runs hotter and gives up its additives sooner. Anyone who has driven down from Mount Mitchell at dusk knows the fog does not announce itself.

Sunset comes earlier every week now, and mountain weather does whatever it wants regardless of the forecast. Wiper blades that survived a Carolina summer are usually finished. Headlight alignment drifts slowly enough that you adapt to it without noticing. Both are quick to check and worth checking before October.
