Why does your RV AC keep tripping the breaker even after it's been cooling great for hours?

Had a customer call me with exactly that problem. The AC would run for hours and cool the rig down perfectly, then the breaker in the RV's electrical panel would trip. It kept happening, over and over.

When I got there, I checked the power coming in from the pedestal first. That was fine. So I started tracing the circuit back through the RV itself, and that's where it got interesting. The 20 amp breaker labeled "AC" wasn't actually interrupting the current to the air conditioner at all. Flip it off and the AC kept running. But when I switched off the adjacent 15 amp breaker labeled "water heater," the AC power died instantly.

The panel had been miswired at the factory. The labels didn't match the actual circuits behind them. A simple fix once you know what you're looking at, but a mistake that could easily leave someone guessing for a long time, or worse, working on the wrong circuit thinking it's dead.

This is a good reminder that electrical panels can be labeled wrong right out of the factory. If your RV AC keeps tripping breakers even though it's cooling fine, don't assume it's the AC unit itself. It could be a wiring or labeling issue further back in the panel.

This is what a loose connection can do to a 50 amp shore power inlet. Heat built up at the hot leg connection until the insulation melted right off the wire and the receptacle itself started melting from the inside. This is one of the most common causes of RV electrical fires, and it usually starts small, a slightly loose screw or a worn contact that generates just enough resistance to cook everything around it over time.

I cut back the damaged wiring to clean, undamaged copper and installed a brand new 50 amp power inlet with fresh, tight connections. Problem solved and the RV is safe to plug in again.

If your shore power cord feels warm to the touch, if you smell anything hot or burnt near your power inlet, or if your breaker trips for no clear reason, do not ignore it. Take a look at these condenser fins from an RV rooftop AC unit, crushed completely flat. My best guess is someone tried to clean or straighten them without the right tools, which can end up doing more harm than good. Crushed fins block the airflow the AC needs to actually cool your rig.

RV rooftop AC units are sealed systems, so the condenser can't be replaced by itself. Once the fins are damaged this badly, the entire unit has to go.

No cold air coming out of your RV's AC? 🥵 Before you call for repair, check your filters first! Had a customer this week with this exact issue, dirty filters were choking off airflow to the unit. Easy fix, and something every RV owner can do themselves in a few minutes.

During cooling season here in ABQ, get in the habit of checking your RV AC filters every couple weeks, more often if you're parked somewhere dusty. It could save you a costly service call.

I ran into this on a service call here in Albuquerque, and it's a solid reminder of why RV electrical issues shouldn't be put off.

Could be a loose connection that heated up over time. Could be bad power coming from a campground pedestal. Sometimes it's corrosion, sometimes it's wire that just wasn't sized right for the load. A lot of things can cause this, but the result is the same: heat, melted insulation, and a real fire risk if it goes unnoticed.

This week has been all about RV air conditioner fan motors. I replaced four of them for customers here in Albuquerque, all with the similar symptoms: the AC would run but barely blow any air, or it would just hum and not turn on at all. A worn out fan motor is one of the most common reasons an RV AC stops cooling properly, especially once the weather heats up and the unit is working overtime. I don't keep every fan motor on the truck since there are so many different models out there, but I can usually get the right one ordered and installed within 1 to 2 business days. This one's a good example of why not every frozen coil is caused by low refrigerant. Common culprits are restricted airflow, a dirty coil, or a missing/failed freeze sensor, which is exactly what was going on here. Without that sensor, the system has no way to shut itself down before ice builds up and chokes off the coil completely. Left alone, this leads to compressor damage and a much bigger repair bill.

RV rooftop units are sealed systems, so if yours is freezing up or blowing weak air, it's not something you can just top off. It needs an actual diagnosis to find the real cause.

If your LP (absorption) refrigerator isn’t cooling properly, take a quick look behind the exterior vent cover. Spotting a yellowish powder or residue, smelling ammonia, or hearing a strange gurgling sound are all classic warning signs.

These symptoms mean the cooling unit has cracked and failed. Because these systems operate under high pressure, a leak can't simply be patched—the cooling unit will need to be replaced. Catching it early keeps your food safe and prevents further damage!
