The F55 Mini B38 engine rebuild: Extrication

Engine rebuilds are always delicate exercises.
Damaged hardware removed, the engine block has to be carefully inspected to ensure that its structural integrity is unaffected. Otherwise re-building an engine with damaged cylinder walls will be another disaster waiting to happen.

Death By Detonation

Another look at the MINI F56 Cooper piston damaged (cracked) by prolonged engine detonation.

Not heeding to the signs of detonation will lead to the characteristic death rattle of irreversible damage.

Are you aware of any strange engine sounds lately?

The B-Engine Killer: Heat

The B38/B48 series of modular engines are highly impressive, being widely used in the popular BMW diesel series to the stunning i8, and the Bimmer 1.5 & 2.0 litre F and G series range.
And of course they also power the delicious F series Cooper, Cooper S, JCW and the muscular GP3 (and even the Toyota Supra). We can't deny the engineering robustness and reliability in the development of these powerful warriors.

But even the strongest of warriors have their vulnerabilities and for the B-series engines the biggest enemy is HEAT.

This B38 Cooper came in with very pronounced mis-firing and the unfortunate diagnosis was piston detonation. The use of low grade petrol and degenerated coolant were the main causes of the intense heat build up in the engine chamber resulting in piston damage and the costly repair.

Are you protecting your engine adequately?

An MCF Bulletin:
Engine Temperatures
- The Influencers

We keep hearing about the importance of monitoring engine operating temperatures especially because the BMW/MINI group engines operate at much higher temperatures that other car makes. So is just making sure your coolant is regularly changed and that the temperature doesn't hover beyond 115 deg C enough?

Not really. Many forget the more critical temperature component which is: The Engine Oil Temperature.
(BMWs for a long time only had the oil temperature guage on the meter console instead of the water temp).

Basically optimal operating water temperatures reach normal levels (100 to 110 degrees C)very quickly, usually in 2-3 minutes of normal driving.

The engine oil temp however takes much longer, 10 minutes or so to get warmed up (85-95 degrees C). Of course, if you drive the car hard in the first couple of minutes, the oil quickly gets up to temperature, but that is not particularly good for the car.
It's like just waking up and immediately sprinting down the street. Serious injuries will likely result. So that's why a warm-up is always advised.

The general guide is if you don't have an oil temperature guage, don't start to drive the car hard until well after the water is up to temperature (10 minutes or so). This is basic good driving practice.
But the deeper importance to oil temperature management lies in the engine oil used.

What’s this got to do with engine temperature cooling?

Engine oils not only lubricate engine components, they also cool the engine by carrying heat away just like how coolant does in the cooling system.

Much of the oil cooling is done mainly by airflow across the oil sump below the engine, and by the cooling system carrying heat away from the crankcase/engine block.
Really good engine oils will do this more effectively than others, thereby reducing overall running temperatures without the need for more cooling capacity. This puts lesser stress on the water cooling system.

Correct oil temperatures are essential to disperse combustion products and other contaminants (such as water) and give maximum lubrication.

Running the oil too cool (below the operating temp range) is worse than running it a little too hot. The short journey syndrome is responsible for that milky substance that accumulates in engine valve covers and breather pipes. This is condensation that has emulsified (sludged) the oils because the engine oil isn't getting hot enough to burn it off.

So if a car is used mostly for short journeys (under 20 minutes or so), the engine oil change interval is advised to be done at least twice as often.

Optimum performance, for both economy and power, is achieved at oil temperatures around 95-110 degrees C.

Running up to 115 to 120 degrees C is tolerable but on the high side.

So if you observe the engine temperatures running on the high side for too long (and hence the water temperatures as well) then you could be using the wrong engine oils.

The use of engine oils that are blended in regions that have vastly different heat and driving conditions from ours can lead to medium to long term heat-wear issues. So make sure you know what oil types and grades you are using and take note of any changes in your car's performance and behaviour if you are trying out a new brand.

Note that as the engine oil degrades (ages), it becomes less thermally efficient. This is especially important as inappropriate oils used will breakdown faster resulting in higher engine oil operating temperatures. And we know what this can do to your engine internals, specially the pistons.

So, maintaining a healthy cooling system (proper quality coolants) and getting a guage to monitor coolant and oil temperatures is good basic preventive maintenance practice.

Going one level up would be an upgrade to enhance oil cooling efficiency.
For the MINI which has too little effective space for an oil cooler, the finned aluminium oil sump is the perfect alternative (picture). These have proven to bring optimal temperatures down by up to 5 degrees C!

So remember, of the 2 most hated enemies of your ride: heat and friction, heat is the more evil destroyer. So understanding the importance of engine oil related heat management will go a long way in keeping your car healthy and your repair bills down.

DreamVids Series #15πŸ“½:
The Lust for the Past

Modernity has made things so easy. From touch screen controls to voice enabled commands and the soon autonomous driving (Brrr..!πŸ₯Ά).
Cars are now spilling with technology. So much technology that driving has now become so easy, so comfortable, so perfect.
Maybe just too perfect.

And no wonder the Driver's Revolution has been surging, yearning for the good ole days of pure driving involvement. These rebels find modernity stifling and overly clinical. No technological bells and whistles please. We want back the rawness of k***s and switches, of pure analogue driving engagement.

And this is exactly what Marcus had in mind for this stupendous BMW E30. Stripped down to bare metal and crafted back to perfection, his beautiful Red Raven oozes with the beauty and charm of not only pure simplicity in form but also more ultimately the priceless driving sensations, involvement, engagement and rawness in substance.

Sit back and relax as we cruise down nostalgia with this very special topless beauty.

An MCF Feature: The JCW Suspension System Special Weaponry

So you've got your car tastefully slammed on a nice set of coilovers. Your chassis has also been strengthened with struct bars and anti-roll bars.
Low is the way to go and you're ready to conquer those corners and bends like a zero fighter!
But suddenly you find yourself struggling and fighting excess car body roll and having to make constant steering adjustments. Whats going on?

Well Low is a lifestyle, but not the complete Racestyle.

Let's explore the often forgotten components that are needed to complete your suspension set up.

1. Roll Centre Adjusters.
Picture 3 illustrates what is called a Roll Centre (RC). This is a virtual point where the chassis reacts with the centre of gravity (CoG) to create a point of weight transfer and roll.
A car off the factory has the factory roll centre adjuster to match the stock suspension's ride height so that body roll is minimised during cornering. Ideally, the RC is as close to the ground as possible. So while cornering the forces working through the suspension and tyres ensure that excessive body roll is minimised and comfort is still maintained.

When a car is lowered the RC is also lowered causing the lower arm to move away from its ideal position (parallel to the ground) and bend upwards (Picture 4). This causes the theoretical RC to move below the ground.

So if you're making a hard corner left, the end result of more body roll and the significant mass transfer feels like weight is being thrown out of the front right wheel where the tyres seem to lose grip and the rear left wheel may even be airborne, and you will also thrown to the right and will be fighting through heavy understeer. With time you may even find your suspension bushings pre-maturely worn.

The missing link here is the crucial unglamorous component called the Roll Centre Adjuster (RCA). Insignificant looking, the after market RCAs have a taller stem height that re-align the bent lower arm back to its original height thereby restoring the RC back to its original position above the ground. So the proper geometrics will be restored, the excess body roll and weight transfer will be minimised through quick cornering.
The beautiful Giomic RCAs do wonders for the JCW's cornering prowess. (Pictures 5&6).

2. Tierod Ends.
The Tie Rod serves to ensure that a vehicle steers and tracks straight when the steering wheel is centered.
When a car is lowered, the shifted RC point also causes the factory tie rod angle to deviate resulting in the loss of accurate steering response. Over time steering shakiness, increased tyre wear and wheel mis-alignment will occur. JDM brilliance in the beautiful Giomic tie-rods show the attention to detail in design (Pictures 7 to 9).

3. Lower Arm Bushings.
The R series lower arm bushings are functional for a car in stock form only. Beyond that the weakly constructed (Picture 10) design becomes a major weak link. And while many after market options have proven to be too rigid (and so too much vibrations), JDM brilliance in these Giomic lower arm bushings (Pictures 11) have gotten the thumbs up for their firmness in the drive while yet retaining drive comfort throughout.

Technical drivers know what it takes to build a proper performance under-carriage. So go with the brands they choose and your MINI will always be 1-up against the others.

We have been servicing our Clubman at MCF Auto for the past 3 years and have been very pleased with the professionalism and top-notch customer service from Norbert and his crew. The work was meticulous and there was step by step explanation on what needed to be changed and what needed more attention. With Norbert and his crew, we could trust him to fix the problems and in the words of our daughter who drives the car after the one day servicing, β€˜Wow! After the servicing, the clubman is so much more responsive and ride is smoother! Like new!’
Brought down our car to MCF Auto earlier today to replace the aluminium charge & boost pipe & front/rear steel braided hoses as well. Car feels a lot better, longer boost hold and braking is firm and simply fantastic! Thanks MCF Auto for the good workmanship and patience in replacing both of these parts.
5-STARS to MCF Auto! Just installed the BMS air intake system this morning and boy, it makes a lot of difference and totally smoother in the air flow system! Thanks to Nicolas and his technician who made this possible! πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½

Big up to the team at MCF . First class experience when repairing my Mini Cooper Cabrio. Lots of fussy work completed with no drama. Delivered under my budget. Car drives heaps better than before it went in for surgery. Happy happy happy πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
One upgrade that will help, coz the OEM unit is not very heat resistant. Good recommendation from Norbert.
The MCF team has done it again! Thanks guys! I have had issue with my ride over the last 2 days where the engine vibrated during acceleration with occasion of almost cutting out during over-taking. Thanks to the experience team at MCF, the problem was diagnosed and solved in under an hour! Lesson learnt - do not overlook your ignition coils (see photo) and regular maintenance. :-)
It's easy to ignore the slight smells of burnt oil or maybe some petrol while you drive....can do next servicing lah...
