Not every defect should be removed.
This Ford Expedition is a good example of why.
This Expedition came to us showing the effects of years of daily use and exposure.
The paint was heavily swirled, dull, and lacking clarity. Water spots covered virtually every exterior surface, with many of them having already etched deep into the clear coat. The vehicle also carried its fair share of deeper scratches and defects accumulated through years of daily use.
Before any polishing could begin, the vehicle underwent a thorough decontamination process to expose the true condition of the paint.
As correction began and the paint started to regain clarity, it became apparent that the defects ran much deeper than initially expected. Severe water spot etching and deeper scratches that had been hidden beneath years of contamination started to reveal themselves, many of which were far more apparent in person than what the camera was able to capture.
Over the course of this project, we performed a full interior detail, glass polishing and coating, a two-step paint correction, and finished it off with ceramic coating protection.
If you look closely at the photos, you’ll notice that some of the deeper scratches and water spot etching still remain. That’s intentional and it’s something we’re not afraid to show.
We’re sharing this not to showcase a flawless showroom finish but to highlight the balance between defect removal and paint preservation.
As professional detailers, our responsibility isn’t to create a perfect “for the gram” photo at the expense of the paint. It’s to improve the vehicle as much as safely possible while preserving the long-term health of the finish.
Could we have removed more defects? Maybe.
Could sanding have reduced some of the remaining etching? Perhaps.
But every improvement comes at a cost. In this case, doing so would have required sacrificing more clear coat than we were comfortable with. While much of the vehicle had adequate paint thickness, some areas measured significantly thinner than others, requiring us to adjust our approach and leave a safe margin of error.
Throughout the project, we remained in constant communication with the owner, discussing the vehicle’s condition, limitations, and available options. We’re grateful for the trust placed in us and for allowing us to prioritize the long-term health of the paint over short-term cosmetic gains.
Before handing the keys back, we verified the finish using gloss readings to ensure the vehicle met our standards.
The goal was never perfection.
The goal was preservation.
