🌸☀️ IT’S OFFICIALLY SPRING! ☀️🌸

The sun’s starting to show its face, the jumpers are coming off… and suddenly everyone remembers SUMMER IS COMING!

So now’s the time to wander out to the shed and have a good hard look at those boat, jet ski and motorbike seats you’ve been successfully ignoring all winter. 😂

🚤 Boat seats looking a bit sad?
🌊 Jet ski seat cracked, faded or held together with hope?
🏍️ Bike seat needing a recover, repair or a bit more comfort for those summer rides?

NOW is the time to get them sorted!

Because we all know how this goes… nobody thinks about their summer toys until the first gorgeous weekend arrives, then suddenly it’s:

“Any chance you can have it done by Friday?”

And if you’re dusting off the boat and getting ready for summer, we hope you have a bit more luck catching fish than Macca does! 🎣🤣

Apparently seaweed counts as a catch if you’re desperate enough. 🌿🐟😂

Another productive week at McDonald Motor Trimmers! ✂️🧵

It’s always a good feeling when a few bigger jobs make their way out the door, and this week we managed to tick off a fair few!

The ’65 Cadillac seats are all finished and looking pretty flash, and we also wrapped up the full set of ’34 Ford seats who had a kit fitted to them. Two very different styles, but both were great jobs to see come together. 😍

We also squeezed in another set of Fiat camper squabs, a couple of quick seat repairs to help get vehicles through their warrants, and gave a rather tired-looking pair of digger armrests a complete revamp — amazing what a bit of new vinyl can do!

Plenty of sewing, pulling, stretching and the odd swear word along the way 😂, but all in all, a very productive week!

Have a great weekend everyone — from the team at McDonald Motor Trimmers. 🚗🪡✂️

🔧🪡 McDonald Motor Trimmers – Our Most Asked Questions!

We thought it was time to answer some of the questions that pop up ALL the time in our workshop – and save Cherry’s fingers from typing the same answers over and over 😂

❓ How long have you been doing this?
Quite a while! 😂

Three generations long, in fact! McDonald Motor Trimmers is clocking up an amazing 76 years this year. 🎉

That’s three generations of learning the trade, passing down the tricks, solving problems and probably saying “Who designed this bloody thing?” more times than we could ever count. 🤣

There’s a whole lot of motor trimming knowledge behind our little family business – and we’re pretty proud to still be doing what our family has been doing for 76 years. ❤️

❓ “How much will my job cost?”
Ahhhh… THE question. 😂 And definitely one of our most asked!

We need to actually know what we’re dealing with first.

As much as Cherry enjoys her tarot cards, 🔮 we have yet to master the crystal ball!

Price depends on the condition of the job, materials, design and how much work is hiding underneath. Good photos are a fantastic starting point, but sometimes we really do need to see the job in person before we can give you an accurate price.

❓ Do you only do cars?

Definitely not! If it can be trimmed, covered, repaired or sewn, there’s a pretty good chance we’ve had a go at one. Cars, trucks, boats, motorbikes, campervans, tractors, machinery, dining chairs, couches, squabs and all sorts of weird and wonderful things find their way through our doors.

Basically, if it has fabric, vinyl, leather or foam involved… we’re interested. 😂

❓ Do you work outside of the workshop?
Our preference is to work in our workshop.

That’s where all our sewing machines, tools, materials, foam, glues and the million other bits and pieces we seem to need are! 😂 It makes life much easier and means we have everything on hand to do the job properly.

❓ Do you make car seat covers?
No, we don’t. We’re far too busy repairing and recovering the original seats underneath them! 😆

If you’re after removable car seat covers, Rubber Tree can most likely help you out there.

❓ Do you repair or recover steering wheels?
Nope, steering wheels are one of the things we DON’T do.

Even motor trimmers have to draw the line somewhere! 😂

❓ Do you customise motorcycle seats?
🏍️

YES – and this is something we have years of experience doing.

A motorcycle seat doesn’t just have to look good – it needs to be comfortable too, especially if you actually like riding your bike for more than 20 minutes without losing feeling in parts of your anatomy! 😂

Over the years we’ve learnt a lot about reshaping foam, changing seating positions, adding support and making seats more comfortable while still keeping them looking great.

Whether you want a different shape, a custom look, a fresh cover or you simply want to make your bike seat a whole lot nicer to sit on, come and have a chat with us.

Your backside may thank you for it! 🍑😂

❓ Can you repair just one part of my seat?

Often, YES! 👍

If the rest of your seat is still looking pretty respectable, we may be able to repair or replace just the worn or damaged section.

No need to throw the whole cow away because one bit of leather has had enough! 🐄😂

❓ Can you fix sagging roof linings?

Absolutely – we do LOTS of them!

Unfortunately, once the foam backing has deteriorated, sticking the old material back up isn’t really a fix. It needs to come down, be stripped properly and recovered.

And yes… once it starts sitting on your head while you’re driving, it’s probably trying to tell you something. 😂

❓ Can you make my seat more comfortable?

In many cases, yes. We can repair collapsed or damaged foam and rebuild areas that have lost their shape and support.

If you feel like you’re sitting IN your seat rather than ON it, it might be time to come and see us!

❓ Can you match the original material?
We’ll certainly try!

Sometimes, particularly with older vehicles, the original material disappeared off the face of the earth about 30 years ago. But we’ll normally find something that works well with what you already have.

❓ Can I supply my own material?
Please talk to us FIRST.

That bargain fabric you found might look fantastic, but not everything is suitable for automotive or upholstery use. We’d much rather check it before you buy 10 metres of something we can’t use. 😬

❓ How long will it take?

How long is a piece of string? 😂

A small repair might be fairly quick. A complete retrim or restoration can involve many, MANY hours of pulling things apart, repairing foam, patterning, cutting, sewing, fitting… taking it back off… adjusting it… and fitting it again.

We’ll give you an idea once we know what we’re dealing with.

❓ Is my job too small?

Definitely not!

Sometimes fixing the little problem now stops it turning into the big expensive problem later. And we do plenty of those little oddball jobs that nobody quite knows who else to take them to.

And finally…

❓ “Can you just quickly stitch/glue this?” 😆

Possibly!

But we’ve learnt over the years that anything beginning with the words “Can you just…” has a suspicious habit of not being quite as “just” as it first appears. 😂😂

That’s the fun of motor trimming though – after all these years, there are still jobs that come through the door that make us look at each other and say…

“Well, that’s a new one!” 🤣

If you’ve got something that needs repairing, recovering or bringing back to life, send McDonald Motor Trimmers a message with a few good photos and we’ll let you know what we can do. 🪡✂️🚗

Another fun and busy week at McDonald Motor Trimmers! 😄🧵✂️

We’ve had a great mix of jobs through the workshop again this week, including:

🚐 A full set of camper seats completed
🚛 Scania truck linings
🚗 A fresh Golf roof lining
🚐 Seat repairs from a 12-seater Toyota van
🔥 Heated seat pads fitted into Ford Ranger seats — perfect for these chilly mornings!
🏍️ A few quad bike seat repairs
🚜 And some tractor seats brought back to life too!

Plenty of variety, which is just how we like it — there’s never a dull week around here! 😂

And somehow we’re already flying through the year... Christmas will be here before we know it! 🎄😳

So if you’ve been thinking, “I really must get those seats/roof lining/boat squabs/camper cushions done before Christmas…” — now might be the time to get into gear! ⚙️😂

The closer we get to the end of the year, the busier that diary gets, so don’t leave it until the Christmas rush, as we will be closing a week earlier this year than normal.

Have a great weekend from Mac & Cherry at McDonald Motor Trimmers ❤️✂️

Another busy week at McDonald Motor Trimmers ✂️🧵

We’ve had a good mix through the workshop this week!

🚙 The ’65 Cadillac rear seats are finished and looking pretty flash in their new two-tone diamond design — now we’ve just got the fronts to tackle!

🖤 A Prado seat base has had a new lease on life with fresh leather replacing the worn and damaged original.

🚐 We’ve also repaired the damaged Fiat camper seat base covers, keeping as much of the original as possible and replacing the sections that had seen better days.

🛋️ And that’s a wrap on the three-piece couch suite! All three couches are now completed and safely back home, looking smart and ready for plenty more years of use.

A bit of automotive, a bit of furniture and plenty of time behind the sewing machine — just the way we like it! 😄

🚗 We need your help settling a friendly debate! 🚗

This classic bench seat will be completely rebuilt from the tired original soon, but now our customer has one final decision...

The car is red, and they're wondering whether to go all red again or try something a little different.

So... which one gets your vote?

❤️ 1 – All Red
🖤 2 – Black/Red Houndstooth
🤍 3 – White with Red Piping
❤️🤍 4 – Red & White with Diamond Stitch

Drop your favourite number in the comments and tell us why! We'd love to see which design comes out on top.

It's amazing how changing the trim can completely transform the look and feel of a vehicle. We can't wait to show you which design the customer chooses and the finished seat.👌

Flu? What flu? 🤧💪

It might have slowed us down a little, but it certainly didn't stop us! While Cherry battled the flu this week, the workshop still kept ticking over.

✅ A BMW motorcycle seat was reshaped and altered to suit our customer's requirements, giving them a much more comfortable ride.

✅ A Cupra Cobra seat that had been involved in an accident was brought back to life with brand-new airbags and a genuine replacement cover fitted straight out of the box.

✅ And we finished the first of three couches, giving it a complete makeover with fresh new upholstery. We can't wait to show you the other two as they're completed!

Not a bad effort considering we were running on tissues, cough drops and determination! 😅

Thanks to all our customers for your patience while we powered through. Here's hoping this week comes with a little less flu and a little more energy! 🤧➡️☀️

🥶 Winter has definitely arrived at McDonald Motor Trimmers! ❄️

It's been so cold this week that our workshop supervisor, Mia, has gone through every trick she knows to stay warm. First it was her own jumper... then she borrowed Grandad's jumper... and when that still wasn't enough, she decided she'd become a lap dog by squeezing onto her dad's knee! 🐶❤️

The cold hasn't just been getting to Mia either. The vinyl has been about as flexible as a sheet of cardboard, making every job that little bit harder. But as always, we don't let a bit of winter stop us!

This week we've completed:
🛥️ This red and white set of back-to-back boat seats, side panels and small rear seats.
🪑 Six dining chairs and four bar stool tops for one of our wonderful customers from the Bay of Islands.
🚚 A custom canvas road cover and boat seats.
🧵 Plus plenty of other covers and repairs that have kept us busy throughout the week.

A big thank you to all of our amazing customers for keeping us busy, even through these freezing winter days. We hope you're all staying a lot warmer than the vinyl is! 😄

Another busy week in the workshop!

It's been a real mix of projects keeping us on our toes this week. We've been busy with:

🪑 Chair restorations, including this beautiful cane-backed dining chair.
🏍️ A freshly retrimmed motorcycle seat with classic diamond stitching.
🚗 Car seat repairs, bringing tired and worn seats back to life.
🛋️ Restaurant seat bases and booth squabs, ready for many more years of service.
🔧 Plus plenty of other repairs and custom upholstery jobs that have kept the machines humming!

No two days are ever the same at McDonald Motor Trimmers, and that's exactly how we like it.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing customers for keeping us so busy—we really appreciate your support! 😊

If your vehicle, bike, boat, caravan, café or home furniture needs some TLC, get in touch. We'd love to help!

School Holidays = Business as Usual... Sort Of! 😄🚌🛋️

School holidays around here don't exactly mean slowing down... they just mean we've gained another "staff member"! 😂 Josh has been hanging out at the workshop, keeping us company (and making sure we don't have too much fun without him).

This week's mission has included a stack of school bus seat repairs, with Mac hard at work making sure they're ready for the kids to head back to school. We've also ticked off another couch, and we're pretty happy with how it turned out!

Even with the holidays, it's all go at McDonald Motor Trimmers—one project finished, another one rolling through the door.

We wouldn't have it any other way!

Hope everyone's enjoying the school break... whether you're relaxing or, like us, just swapping the classroom for the workshop! 😄👍
