It might look like we're just smoothing out the inside of an engine cylinder, but there's a lot more going on.

Honing is a precision machining process that helps create the correct cylinder bore finish for the piston rings to work properly.

The process creates a fine crosshatch pattern on the cylinder walls. That pattern has an important job - helping retain a thin film of oil while allowing the piston rings to seal against the cylinder.

Get the surface finish wrong, and you can end up with poor ring sealing, increased oil consumption and premature wear.

It's one of those jobs where the details matter, even though you'll never see the finished work once the engine is back together.

Precision isn't just about how something looks. It's about how it performs.

A freshly cleaned cylinder head certainly makes a better photograph - but appearance isn’t the main reason for doing it.

Deposits, residue and general grime can hide the surfaces and areas that need to be inspected. Cleaning gives the machinist a much clearer starting point for assessing the component and determining what work may be required.

First, make it clean enough to inspect properly.

Then, measure and make decisions based on what is actually there.

Save this for the next time someone says an engine component “just needs a clean”.
