E Hayes and Sons is a family business. It is a company built around the strong family principles which our pioneering forefathers brought to Southland in the late 1800's. For years, the friendship between Burt Munro and the Hayes family had been built around a shared passion for motorcycles, engineering innovation, mutual respect — and trust.

In 1977, shortly before his death, Burt made that trust tangible.

He sold his treasured Munro Special to Norman and Neville Hayes.

Not to ride. Not to continue racing. But to care for.

The handwritten receipt records a transaction of $1,300. But what changed hands that day was worth considerably more than the figure written on the page.

Burt was entrusting the motorcycle that had consumed so much of his life — the machine he had built, rebuilt, raced and taken halfway around the world in pursuit of speed — to people he knew and trusted.

These two photographs capture that transition almost perfectly.

Burt beside his Munro Special — the last known photograph of them together.

Norman Hayes beside the same motorcycle — now entrusted into his care, to be displayed in our store for the world to share and enjoy.

As one story was drawing to a close, our own responsibility was just beginning.

Today, Burt's beloved motorcycle — the Authentic, Original, Legendary 1920 Indian Scout he named the Munro Special — remains here in our store, proudly displayed and FREE for everyone to see.

Just where Burt left it. Just where he wanted it to stay.

A little piece of Hayes history has found its way to us - and it's worth the weight.

We believe these are a set of old British-made Salter farm scales, probably dating from around the 1930s.

But take a closer look at the face and there’s a connection to a much bigger story.

When New Zealand began changing from imperial measurements to metric in the late 1960s / early 1970s, farmers were left with thousands of perfectly good scales still measuring in pounds. Rather than replace them, Hayes Engineering Ltd – by then operating from Templeton, near Christchurch – offered a practical solution, converting existing scales to kilograms with newly calibrated faces.

Hayes Engineering had its beginnings with Ernest Hayes at the famous Hayes Engineering Works in Oturehua, Central Otago, before the manufacturing side of the business relocated to Templeton in 1952.

Now, more than 50 years later, one of those converted scales has found its way back into the wider Hayes story.

A big thank you to Hayden, a keen-eyed metal-recycler who spotted these, recognised the Hayes name and significance, and rescued them rather than seeing another little piece of history disappear.

They’re now proudly on display as part of our E Hayes Motorworks Collection™ – another everyday object with a rather special story to tell.
