A series of FREE events hosted by local motorcycle retailers throughout September as part of Motorcycle Awareness Month. Designed for new and returning riders, these events will feature expert advice on gear and clothing, smart riding tips, bike maintenance and technology and FREE Ride Forever courses.

There'll also be high value prizes up for grabs, free food and spot prizes!

The Ride Smart Series is brought to you in partnership with Christchurch City Council, Hurunui District Council, Selwyn District Council, Waimakariri District Council, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Ride Forever, and local retailers.

Illegal use of electric dirt bikes is a growing issue in our community creating serious concerns, with the vehicles featuring in a growing number of crashes, and cases of illegal riding.

Here are some tips to help you know if you can ride your electric dirt bike, or high-powered electric scooter on the road.

Electric dirt bikes are not bicycles if:

• They have motors exceeding 300 watts,
• They lack pedals, or
• Are capable of autonomous propulsion without rider input.

You need a valid class 1 learner driver’s licence if:

• The electric motor exceeds 300 watts (not kilowatts)
• The dirt bike/scooter does not have pedals (it cannot be classified as a power-assisted bicycle).

You must have a class 6 learner licence if:

• The electric powered bike or scooter is capable of speeds over 50kmh

If ridden on a road, any dirt bike or high-powered E-scooter needs a registration.

• If it cannot exceed 50kmh: It may be registered as a moped
• If it can exceed 50kmh: It must be registered as a motorcycle
• In both cases, the vehicle must be entry certified and meet roadworthy standards
• A Warrant of Fitness is required unless exempted
• Numerous models are available direct from manufacturers that meet LAMS and registration criteria.

Remember motorised dirt bikes, quad bikes, and high-powered scooters (whether electric, or petrol) are not permitted in Council parks and reserves.

Police are routinely stopping riders to make sure both the bike and the rider are compliant with the law, so make sure you are following the above to ensure you do not receive a fine or have your bike immobilised.

🏍 Rider Down – Motorcycle First Aid Workshop 🏍
Sunday 21 June, 9am - 3pm

Join this free workshop to gain essential motorcycle crash prevention, scene management and CPR + first aid skills from Mark Going – a seasoned trainer, lifelong rider and Critical Care Paramedic.

Every participant will receive a free motorcycle first aid kit along with bonus motorcycling goodies. Enjoy morning tea on arrival and a light lunch as part of this practical and engaging event.

Watch this space for details of the event that is being planned for a venue in Kaiapoi in September, which is Motorcycle Awareness Month.
