A couple of Nissan VG30 turbochargers in the workshop for a freshen up and performance upgrade.
These factory turbochargers feature ceramic turbine wheels, similar to the RB series turbos. For their time, they were an advanced design, combining lightweight ceramic turbines with a ball-bearing centre section to deliver excellent response.
Unfortunately, the ceramic turbine wheels are also well known for failing, particularly on modified engines or after years of service.
For many years we've been upgrading these units by machining a Garrett CHRA into the original housings. This retains around 95% bolt-in compatibility while significantly improving durability and reliability.
Only a couple of minor modifications to the oil feed system are required due to converting them back over to journal bearing
