It only needed new seal. If only it was that easy 🤔

Not always.

This bearing housing has a bearing bore that runs true, but the piston ring bore is 0.06 mm out of alignment with the bearing bore.

Because the shaft runs in the bearing bore, the piston ring bore must be concentric with it. Simply replacing the seal ring without measuring won't correct the problem.

The correct repair is either replace the bearing housing with a new one, or grind the ring area seal oversize which will true this to the bearing bore.

Anyone can replace parts. A proper rebuild starts with measurement.

Turbocharger Tip

When removing or reinstalling a compressor cover, take extra care not to contact the compressor wheel blades during assembly. It does not take much to nick, bend or damage a blade especially on tighter tolerance turbochargers.

Even minor blade damage can lead to:
Balance issues
Reduced performance
Unwanted noise
Premature turbocharger failure

A few good habits

Keep components clean
Never force the cover into place
Check alignment carefully
Rotate the assembly by hand before tightening fully

A few extra minutes and a bit of care can save a very expensive repair bill later on

This Garrett TV8101 turbo came in for a checkover today.

Once we removed the turbine housing, it became pretty clear we’d found half the engine inside it 🤣

Unfortunately this is the result of a dropped valve, a good reminder of just how much damage engine failures can cause to a turbocharger in a very short amount of time.

A few modifications underway to fit this Evo 3 turbo in place of the old TC06 setup on a Starion.

Because the factory TC06 turbine housing bolts directly to the manifold, and the Evo 3 housing uses studs instead, we needed to relieve the back of the housing to allow clearance for the nuts and open the mounting holes out to 10.5mm.

Nothing too major, just a few tweaks to make everything work nicely together. Should be a great upgrade and definitely wake the old girl up.

We recently had an old-school Mazda 12A running a Hitachi HT18 turbo come into the workshop for some attention.

On inspection, the compressor wheel was damaged.
Rather than rebuild it back to original spec, we took the opportunity to modernise the setup while retaining its character.

What we did:

Retained the original turbine wheel and turbine housing
Upgraded to a Garrett bearing housing
Fitted a Garrett compressor wheel and cover
Machined to suit and assembled in house

The result: a stronger, more efficient setup while still keeping the original HT18 foundation.

This IHI 9VA06 turbocharger came in for inspection from an Audi A3 due to actuator fault codes.

Inspection identified significant wear in the actuator valve guide, causing the actuator to operate outside its calibrated range and trigger fault codes.

This is a commonly observed wear-related fault on this style of Audi/VW turbocharger.

When it comes to ball bearing turbos, the differences aren’t always visible but they’re critical
The graph to the right shows three consecutive balance runs on one of our TCRX ball bearing units. Notice how the lines track almost identical across the entire RPM range. That level of consistency is what we try aim for every build.
Ball bearing turbos are far more sensitive to balance than journal bearing units
There’s far less tolerance for variation so any slight imbalance, misalignment, or machining inconsistency shows up immediately at speed.

They demand:

* Extremely high quality components
* Precision machining across the entire rotating assembly
* A correctly engineered bearing pack
* Attention to detail when assembling

That’s why we take the time to ensure every unit is assembled and tested to the same standard. When everything is right you get clean, repeatable balance every single run.
That consistency is what delivers reliability and performance when it matters most.
Consistency like this doesn’t happen by accident it’s built into every unit.
