We hope everyone had a great weekend!

This week has been incredibly busy here at Papanui Tyre & Auto with many customers coming in for WOF inspections, servicing, and repairs. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers for their continued trust and support. We truly appreciate every vehicle that is entrusted to our team.

Today, we'd like to share one of the jobs we completed this week. While it's not a repair we perform every day, we wanted to show that Papanui Tyre & Auto offers much more than just WOFs and tyres.

One of our long-time customers brought their vehicle in after the engine check light came on just before the weekend. After carrying out a diagnostic inspection, we found the fault code:

"Torque Converter Turbine 2 Speed Signal Circuit Malfunction."

Once we identified the issue, we promptly prepared a quote that included parts and labour costs. Unfortunately, Subaru only supplies the complete valve body assembly as a genuine part, which made the repair quite expensive.

Rather than settling for the costly option, we spent time contacting suppliers and searching for an alternative solution. Fortunately, we were able to locate a supplier that sold the sensor separately, allowing us to complete the repair at a significantly lower cost than replacing the entire valve body through Subaru.

When the customer collected their vehicle, they were very happy with both the repair and the savings.

We would also like to remind everyone that all of our technicians are fully qualified mechanics. Many new customers—and even some long-time customers—still think of us primarily as a WOF inspection shop. However, our team is fully equipped and experienced to handle a wide range of mechanical repairs and diagnostics.

Hope all our customers had a great weekend!

We had another busy week at Papanui Tyre & Auto with some big repair jobs coming through after failed WOF inspections. We wanted to share one of the repairs we completed last week because this issue is becoming more common on Subaru 4WD vehicles.

The rear differential mount bushes can wear out over time due to age and kilometres travelled. Eventually, they become damaged and need replacing to pass a WOF inspection.

The rear diff front mount bush is usually easier to replace because the bracket can be removed separately. However, the rear mount bush is a much bigger job — we need to remove suspension components, the driveshaft, and the rear differential itself. It takes time and experience, but nothing is impossible at Papanui Tyre & Auto!

For this repair, we upgraded the bushes to SuperPro polyurethane bushes, which are stronger and longer-lasting than standard rubber bushes. That means better durability and longer life for the vehicle.

Most importantly, our customer was happy to get their vehicle repaired, back on the road quickly, and passed with a fresh WOF.

To our valued customers at Papanui Tyre & Auto,
We’re excited to share that our new hoist has finally been installed at our workshop.
Until now, many of our customers have kindly understood when we had to explain that even simple jobs such as tyre replacements, puncture repairs, and other minor services often required bookings due to the limitations of our workshop setup. While we truly appreciated your understanding, we also know it may have caused inconvenience, and we sincerely thank you for your patience.
Now that our new hoist has been fully installed and is ready for operation, we are incredibly happy and excited to be able to assist more customers faster and more efficiently, with less waiting and less inconvenience.
This upgrade means we can now provide quicker service and improve the overall experience for everyone visiting our workshop.

To our valued customers at Papanui Tyre & Auto — we hope you all had a wonderful Anzac Day.
Just before the Anzac Day long weekend, we were quite busy, and we’d like to sincerely thank everyone who visited our workshop and those who contacted us with enquiries.
Among the many repairs and issues we handled, we wanted to share one simple but very important repair that many drivers often overlook.
One of our customers came to us after noticing engine oil marks on their driveway at home. They also mentioned that the vehicle had a slight vibration and wanted us to diagnose the issue.
After inspection, we found a serious oil leak coming from the rear section of the rocker cover gasket. We also discovered oil leaking through the spark plug seals on cylinders 2 and 4. After explaining the issue, repair cost, and estimated labour time to the customer, we began the repair.
During the repair process, while checking the spark plugs, we found that the spark plugs themselves were heavily worn and needed replacement. We also found evidence that electrical current had been leaking externally from the ignition coil on cylinder 2 due to oil contamination. Because of this, we advised the customer that additional parts were required and provided an updated quote.
The customer was happy with the revised price and approved the additional work.
Once the repair was completed, the oil leak, engine vibration, and misfire were all resolved. When the customer collected the vehicle, they were very pleased with the result.
This repair is a great example of why small oil leaks should never be ignored. When engine oil leaks into the spark plug tubes and reaches the ignition coils, leaving it too long can result in multiple ignition coils needing replacement as well — which can significantly increase repair costs.
We strongly recommend having your vehicle inspected if you notice any oil leaks, or asking your mechanic to check for early signs of leaks during your regular service or oil change. In many cases, catching the issue early means only the gasket needs replacing, helping you avoid much more expensive repairs later.
