Transferring pilots on the busy and unpredictable Lower Mississippi River calls for precise control and manoeuvrability. Crews need to operate safely alongside deep-draft vessels.

That challenge is at the heart of two new pilot boats being built by Snow & Company for the Crescent River Port Pilots’ Association in New Orleans. Designed by Camarc Design, the 50-foot aluminium vessels will pair twin Volvo D13-800 engines with HamiltonJet twin HJ403 waterjets and AVX controls.

The propulsion and control system is designed to give crews the responsive manoeuvrability they need for safe boarding operations, while the vessel’s refined hull provides improved seakeeping, reduced slamming accelerations and enhanced fuel efficiency. With an expected running speed of 32 knots, these vessels aren’t simply designed to get pilots where they need to go quickly. They’re designed to help crews safely manage one of the most demanding parts of the job.
