Do you know the laws relating to two-wheeled electric vehicles? It seems some don’t and are confused about what is an e-bike. Even letting their kids ride bikes on the road on what are actually unlicensed electric motorcycles or mopeds.
Know and obey the law. It’s not hard. Motorbikes are not pushbikes even if they are electric.
VEHICLE CLASSES (NZTA)
AA (pedal cycle) - A vehicle designed to be propelled solely by human power.
AB (power assisted pedal cycle) - pedal cycle to which is attached one or more auxiliary propulsion motors having a combined maximum power output NOT EXCEEDING 300 watts.
LA (Moped) - a two-wheeled motor vehicle (other than a power-assisted pedal cycle) that if electric and has a maximum speed NOT exceeding 50km/h.
LC (Motorcycle) - a two-wheeled motor vehicle that if electric has a maximum speed exceeding 50km/h.
LICENCE CLASSES FOR VEHICLES
AA - None
AB - None
LA - Minimum Class 1 car license.
LC - Class 6 motorcycle license.
Please don’t let unlicensed teenagers ride electric mopeds or motorcycles (Classes LA and LC) on the road as if they were e-bikes (Class AB).
