Keep at least 1.5m when passing cyclists, horse riders & other road users.

②GIVE WAY TO BUSES 🚌

On roads with speed limits of 60km/h or less, give way when a bus signals to leave a bus stop.

From Sunday, 27 September 2026, clocks will move forward by one hour:

2:00 AM → 3:00 AM

Most phones and smart devices will update automatically, but if you have an early flight, ferry, car pick-up or drop-off, it’s worth double-checking your schedule before you travel.

One hour less sleep, but longer days, more sunshine and more time to explore New Zealand. 🚗🌊🏔️

❄️ Winter Driving in New Zealand: Do You Really Need a 4WD?

Heading to the ski fields this winter? You might be wondering if a 4WD is a must.

The short answer: not always.

🚙 4WD vs 2WD

AWD/4WD offers better traction and confidence in snow and icy conditions, especially on steep or challenging roads.

But if your trip is mainly on regular roads and you’re heading to the ski fields in suitable conditions, 2WD can also be a practical and more budget-friendly option.

Looking for better value?

4WD vehicles are often more expensive to rent during winter.

If you don’t specifically need the extra traction, 2WD + snow chains can be a great value option for many winter trips.

⛓️ Snow chains are the key

Some alpine roads may require snow chains depending on weather and road conditions —— even if you’re driving a 4WD.

Always follow the signs and local requirements.

At many ski fields, you’ll find designated **Chain Bays** near the mountain access road. If chains are required, pull into the designated area and fit them before continuing uphill.

🚗 FWD → chains on the front wheels
🚙 RWD → chains on the rear wheels
❄️ AWD/4WD → follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions

Don’t wait until you’re already sliding or stuck in deep snow to put them on!

🏔️ So, which should you choose?

4WD:** More traction and confidence in challenging snow conditions.

2WD + snow chains: A great value option when conditions are suitable and you follow all chain requirements.

Whatever you choose, always check the weather, road conditions and chain requirements before heading into the mountains.
