🐉 The Story Behind the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival (端午节), also known as the Duanwu Festival, is one of the oldest and most celebrated traditional Chinese festivals, with a history spanning over 2,000 years.

The festival is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

It commemorates the life and sacrifice of Qu Yuan (屈原), a respected Chinese poet, scholar, and patriotic statesman of the ancient State of Chu during the Warring States period.

Qu Yuan was deeply devoted to his country and constantly advised his king to govern wisely. Unfortunately, his advice was ignored, and after his homeland was conquered, he was overcome with grief and chose to sacrifice himself by jumping into the Miluo River.

When the local villagers learned of his death, they immediately paddled out in boats to search for him. To prevent fish from consuming his body, they threw parcels of sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river.

These rice dumplings eventually became what we know today as Zongzi (粽子), while the frantic search by boat became the origin of the exciting Dragon Boat Races that continue to be held around the world today.
