A closer look at ’80s rally history.

The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth brought together turbocharged Cosworth power, rear-wheel drive, competition suspension developed for tarmac and gravel, and the unmistakable wind tunnel-tested “whale tail”.

Its shape made a statement from the moment it arrived in the mid-1980s. With Jimmy McRae behind the wheel, it became one of the defining sights of the era.

Decades later, Ford is preparing to take on the rally stages once again as a full factory WRC team in 2028.

The ultimate Christmas present.

James Avis bought this Mk1 Es**rt in Sweden on Christmas Day, adding a car with links to the East African Safari Classic to his collection.

As a rally collector and competitor, James has a real appreciation for cars with history. And this one came with plenty - decades of Es**rt heritage, a story that crossed continents, and one very memorable Christmas Day.

With Ford's return to WRC as a full factory team on the horizon, it's a reminder of the rallying history that continues to inspire what's next.

The definition of ’80s rallying.

Jimmy McRae took this Ford Sierra RS Cosworth straight to victory on its 1987 Circuit of Ireland debut. From there came British Rally Championship success, a place in Ford motorsport history, and a story that would continue with Colin and Alister McRae behind the wheel.

One car. Three McRaes. A rallying legacy built to last, as Ford prepares to write its next chapter with a full factory WRC return in 2028.

Some moments deserve a closer look.

Legendary cars deserved a legendary lens.
We could’ve used a modern camera, but a 1950s film camera felt like the only way to honor these chapters of Ford’s rally history, and set the stage for the next one in 2028.

Not every Mk1 Es**rt story stayed close to home.

Decades after the Mk1 first appeared, the Es**rt name was still writing new chapters in rallying.

In 2003, Alastair Cavenagh and Carl Tundo competed together in a Ford Es**rt on the inaugural East African Safari Classic, taking on the long-distance event across Kenya and Tanzania.

A later chapter in the Mk1 story, but a memorable one.
