As summer arrives, it’s hard to miss the annual reminders about air conditioning servicing and recharging.

There’s certainly a place for routine maintenance, but one thing that often surprises people is that air conditioning faults don’t always have the solution they expect.

This Discovery 5 is a good example. The system wasn’t short of refrigerant for no reason. The condenser had developed a leak, allowing the refrigerant to escape and preventing the air conditioning from performing as it should. Before the system could be recharged, the underlying fault first had to be repaired.

It’s a useful reminder that air conditioning is exactly that: a system. The refrigerant, compressor, condenser, expansion valve, sensors and control modules all rely on one another to do their job. When one part isn’t performing as intended, the symptom is usually the same. The air from the vents simply isn’t cold anymore.

Sometimes a recharge is the right answer. Sometimes a repair comes first. Understanding the difference is why diagnosis remains such an important part of modern vehicle repair.

One of the many enjoyable parts of running a specialist workshop is seeing the sheer variety of cars that pass through our doors.

Not just different models, but different choices.

Some owners prefer black interiors. Others like light cream leather that completely changes the feel of the cabin. Then, every now and again, something arrives that sits somewhere in between.

This Range Rover Sport Autobiography is finished in a beautiful bronze exterior, paired with a tri-tone interior of coffee, cream and chocolate leather. It’s not the specification we’d all choose for ourselves, and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.

The best cars have always reflected the people who own them. Colour, trim and the little details are often a quiet expression of personality, and it’s satisfying seeing a vehicle that’s been configured to somebody’s own taste rather than following the crowd.

That’s one of the privileges of spending our days around Jaguars and Land Rovers.

No two are ever quite the same.

Sometimes, the message on the dashboard isn’t really telling you what’s wrong.

This vehicle arrived with a Cruise Control Not Available warning, but the fault lay somewhere entirely different. The root cause was within the air suspension system, where a restricted compressor exhaust filter was preventing the system from operating as it should. The cure was simply to replace the original gauze with Land Rover’s revised, more freely flowing design before carrying out the necessary checks to confirm the repair.

It’s the sort of fault that reminds us why diagnosis is about understanding systems rather than simply reading fault codes. Modern vehicles are made up of dozens of control modules, all communicating with one another, so a problem in one area can quite easily reveal itself somewhere else.

In a way, it took us back to our very first repair after opening JAS. That vehicle also arrived with a suspension fault, but after following the evidence, the cause turned out to be something nobody would have guessed at first glance: a blocked fuel filter.

The vehicles have changed enormously since then, and the technology has become considerably more sophisticated, but the process hasn’t really changed at all. The symptom is simply the starting point. The real challenge, and the interesting part of the job, is understanding the sequence of events that led to it.

Early diesel-powered Ingenium 2 litre engines have always been known for balance shaft issues - it’s one of the reasons why we advise replacing the shafts whenever we replace the timing chains too…both jobs require removal of the gearbox so it’s a case of “seeing as we’re in there”…

This worn shaft was the cause of an incredibly loud noise from the engine…just check out the lines on the bearing journal. With a pair of new shafts fitted (and a lot of other parts) the engine was back to being smooth and quiet ❤️

From a distance, it can look like the repair itself.

The traction battery is lowered from the vehicle, carefully supported on our specialist stand and moved clear of the chassis. It’s the largest and heaviest single component on an I-PACE, so it’s understandable why it draws all the attention.

Today, though, it was simply the route to something else.

Modern vehicles are an exercise in compromise. Every control unit, cable and bracket has to occupy the same finite space, which means reaching one component often starts by removing another. Sometimes that’s an undertray or a wheel arch liner. Occasionally, it’s the traction battery.

It’s one of the more interesting aspects of working on modern Jaguars and Land Rovers. The part being removed isn’t always the part being repaired, and understanding the difference is just as important as knowing how to remove it safely.

Once the new component is installed, everything goes back together exactly as it left the factory, followed by the necessary high-voltage checks, commissioning and road testing to prove the repair.

Looking at the finished vehicle, you’d never know where the journey to that repair began, but that’s often how modern engineering works. The biggest step in the process is sometimes simply creating the access to do the real work.

Every now and again, a car arrives that makes the workshop feel just a little brighter.

Today’s example is this F-Type, finished in a shade of blue that seems to change with every angle and every shift in the light. It’s one of those colours that refuses to blend into the background, even in a workshop full of interesting machinery. It happens to be here for a routine service, although that’s almost incidental.

Sometimes it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the car itself. Jaguar gave the F-Type a shape that still feels special every time one rolls through the doors, and it’s a reminder that great engineering isn’t always measured in figures and specifications. Occasionally, it’s measured by the simple fact that you find yourself looking back at it as you walk away.

There’s an interesting aspect of vehicle repair that most people never see.

Although a workshop can be a busy place, much of the work itself is done alone. A technician dismantles a vehicle, lays out the components, carries out the repair and then returns everything to exactly where it belongs.

In reality, though, they’re never quite working on their own.

Every decision made during dismantling is left for the same technician to deal with later. A bolt placed carefully in order, a bracket set alongside the component it belongs to, electrical connectors routed so they can only return one way… they’re all small decisions made for the benefit of a future version of yourself.

By the time reassembly begins, you’re no longer relying on memory. You’re relying on the standard you set an hour earlier.

It’s one of those habits that nobody notices when it’s done well. There are no warning lights to celebrate it and no customer is likely to ask how the fixings were organised during the repair.

Even so, it matters.

Good workmanship is often nothing more than a collection of thoughtful decisions, each one making the next a little easier than it might otherwise have been.

At first glance, there wasn’t much mystery here - the tyre was losing pressure, the warning light was on and the vehicle was behaving exactly as you’d expect when it has a puncture.

Except it didn’t have one.

The leak turned out to be coming from the TPMS valve assembly rather than the tyre itself, producing all the usual symptoms while quietly hiding the real cause in plain sight.

It’s one of the things we enjoy about working on modern vehicles. Every now and again, something that appears entirely straightforward decides to take a slightly different route to the answer.

The warning light wasn’t wrong…the tyre was definitely losing air.

Every vehicle arrives with a reason for being here.

Sometimes it’s a warning light. Sometimes it’s a noise, a vibration or a concern raised during routine servicing. Occasionally it’s simply time for a closer inspection.

What follows is a process that most owners never see.

Bonnets are opened. Vehicles are lifted into the air. Components hidden from view for years at a time are inspected, tested and evaluated. Information is gathered, assumptions are challenged and decisions are made based on evidence rather than guesswork.

It’s not always glamorous work, and it rarely makes for dramatic photographs, but it sits at the heart of maintaining any modern Jaguar or Land Rover.

The answer is often hidden somewhere beneath the surface.

The job is knowing where to look.
