A walk through of the MH 27 Mk2 Golf project.
Mike explains how the build came together, from the Mk2 shell and modern MQB hardware through to the chassis work, drivetrain, wiring, software and final setup.

It’s been a big project, but the aim was always fairly simple: keep the character of the Mk2, and improve the areas where modern engineering made sense.

🎥We’ve put together a walk through of the Mk2 Golf project and the process behind it.

It’s been a fairly involved build, and it was never just a case of putting a modern engine into an older shell.
The starting point was working out how to bring a Mk2 Golf and modern MQB based Volkswagen hardware together properly. That meant looking at the shell, the floorpan, the structure, the rust repair, the subframes, the suspension geometry and the overall rigidity of the car before getting too far into the powertrain side of things.

From there, the engine and gearbox were built, the cooling and fuel systems were developed, and the car was brought back together mechanically.

One of the bigger challenges was the wiring and software. A lot of the original Volkswagen control systems were removed, so we had to make the dash, steering controls, DSG, power distribution and CAN systems work together in a way that was reliable and still felt right inside a Mk2.

The aim was to keep the identity of the car, but improve the areas that needed improving with modern engineering.

It’s been a big learning process, but one we’re proud of.
