🚗 What do you need to do to pass your UK driving test?
🇬🇧 💡 Number of hours? The number of hours is not what makes you test-ready — your driving standard does.
There is no minimum number of hours required by the DVSA.
As a general guideline, learners often need around 45 hours of professional lessons + 22 hours of private practice, but this is only an average, not a requirement.
✅ Pass the Theory Test – this must be passed before taking the practical test, but you can learn and practise driving without having passed your theory.
✅ Be able to drive safely and independently, without help from your instructor. There is no legal minimum number of driving hours.
📚 Know the Highway Code and be able to apply it in real-life situations.
👀 Good observation, mirror use, blind-spot checks and hazard awareness.
🚦 Be confident with junctions, roundabouts, meeting situations, lane discipline, speed and progress.
🔄 Be able to complete the required manoeuvres safely and under control.
🅿️ Be able to pull up on the left safely – this may be required 3 times during the test.
🛑 Be prepared for a controlled stop/emergency stop, if asked.
🧭 Complete independent driving, following a sat-nav or traffic signs.
🔧 Know your Show Me / Tell Me questions.
👁️ Pass the eyesight check.
❌ 0 serious faults
❌ 0 dangerous faults
⚠️ Maximum 15 driving faults (minors) – 16 = fail.
⏱️ How many hours of lessons?
You should be able to complete the test safely and independently, without your instructor helping you.
The practical test includes around 35 minutes of driving, including independent driving, manoeuvres and the other elements of the test.
