Slough Garage Ordered to Pay £1,600 Following DVSA Illegal Modification Investigation
SVG Motorsport fined after joint operation discovers removal of catalytic converter and "pop and bangs" remap
Reading Magistrates Court ordered SVG Motorsport Ltd to pay £1,600 on 14 August 2026 after the Slough business pleaded guilty to making an illegal vehicle modification.
The financial penalty comprises a £200 fine, an £80 victim surcharge, and £1,320 in compensation. The prosecution followed a joint undercover investigation by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Thames Valley Police, which established that the garage had removed a vehicle’s catalytic converter and remapped its engine to produce “pop and bang” exhaust noise.
The DVSA stated that the business failed to inform the customer that the alterations rendered the vehicle illegal for use on public roads. These modifications increase noise levels and vehicle emissions, causing vehicles to fail roadworthiness standards.
Chris Dormand, head of the DVSA’s Market Surveillance Unit, said:
“DVSA works tirelessly to stop pop and bang modifications, removing antisocial noise and excess pollution from our streets.”
“There is no excuse for garages who make these illegal alterations.”
“DVSA will target any businesses who flout the law, as demonstrated by the success of this prosecution.”
Businesses convicted of executing illegal vehicle modifications face unlimited fines. Reports regarding unsafe or illegal vehicle alterations can be submitted to the DVSA Market Surveillance Unit through
