One upgrade slot. One budget. You can take home a proper subwoofer, or a new set of front speakers. Which way are you going?

This is the exact fork in the road we walk customers through every week. Add a sub and you get the low-end weight a factory system physically cannot reproduce. The kick drum hits in your chest. Bass guitars stop sounding like a vague hum and start sounding like notes.

Upgrade the front stage instead, and the change is somewhere else entirely. Vocals lift off the door panels and settle in the center of the dashboard. Hi-hats sit in the corners of the windshield where the recording engineer actually placed them. You hear breath, fingers on strings, room tone.

Neither answer is wrong. Bass-first listeners want to feel the track. Stage-first listeners want to hear the room it was recorded in. Most of our builds eventually do both, but almost everyone starts on one side of this line.

Two customers walk into the shop. One wants the trunk to look completely untouched. The other wants the trunk to stop people mid-aisle at a show.

Both are real Subtronix builds. Both run the same caliber of components, DSP tuning, and acoustic treatment under the surface.

The gap between "I want better sound" and actually getting it usually isn't money. It's knowing what order to do things in.

Most upgrades go sideways because someone picks the components first, then tries to make them fit the car. Bespoke design works the opposite way. Goals and cabin first. Components second. Tuning last.

A sports car's tight cabin reflects sound completely differently than an SUV. Same speakers, same amp, two completely different results. That's why the sequence matters as much as the parts list.

A customer brought us a Corsa last month with a brand new head unit fitted elsewhere. Lovely screen. Wireless CarPlay. And steering wheel controls that did absolutely nothing 🔧

That is a £200 mistake a ten minute conversation would have caught. His car needed an interface module, not a full stereo swap. The previous installer skipped the diagnostic step and went straight to the hardware.

This is the part most people get wrong. Some vehicles route steering wheel controls, climate data, and reverse camera feeds through the OEM unit. Replace it blind and those features vanish for good.

A £4,000 speaker set without proper DSP tuning can sound worse than a £600 set that's been configured correctly. The hardware gets the sound in. The software decides where it lands.

A customer told us this last week, six months after we fitted his new head unit: the screen turned out to be the least important thing that changed.

He came in for CarPlay. That was the whole brief. He wanted to stop unlocking his phone at roundabouts to skip a track, and a mirrored dash felt like the obvious fix.

What he didn't expect was the rest of it. A cleaner signal from a better DAC before the sound even reached his factory speakers. Steering wheel buttons that still worked exactly as Volkswagen designed them. And a driving habit he hadn't realised was genuinely unsafe, gone within a week.
