⚠️ More than 𝟱𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱, including several BMW models, Range Rover Evoque and Volvo EX30 models.

Some of the reported issues include airbag faults and high voltage battery concerns. Not exactly the sort of thing you want to discover by chance.

Many drivers assume they’ll be told if their car is affected, but recalls can easily be missed, especially if the car has changed owners.

Chinese car brands are moving quickly in the UK.

Good prices. Strong specs. Increasing visibility.

But there’s a practical issue that could slow things down: 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Some buyers are finding that certain Chinese EV and hybrid models are harder to insure, more expensive to cover, or come with fewer options than they expected.

And that makes sense when you look at it from the insurer’s side.
Repair data is still limited. Claims history is still developing. Parts supply and repair networks are still maturing.

It's not just petrol prices that are on the rise....

Used car prices are climbing too. 📈

According to Auto Trader data, used car prices rose 1.8% month on month in April, reaching an average of £17,397. That is the strongest monthly price growth since November 2021.

A few key market trends 👇

⚡ Used EV demand up 59% year on year
⏱️ Used cars selling in 27 days on average
🚙 Cars aged 10 to 15 years saw the fastest price growth

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 - #𝟭𝟬 𝗕𝗠𝗪 𝗘𝟯𝟲 𝟯𝟮𝟱𝗶 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗽𝗲

The itch for another straight-six led me to Aylesbury and £3,250 later, I had the upgrade I had been after — a 1993 BMW E36 325i Coupé in Sterling Silver!

I picked it up just as car forums were booming and joined e36coupe.com for "research" and immediately descended into mods: blue angel eyes, M3 wheels + lenses, black BMW badges, lowered suspension, chrome interior bits, chipped ECU, sub and amps in the boot, driven by a Panasonic head unit. Tasteful(ish). Loud(ish). I loved it.

It was also my first step into car meets. I met a lot of good people—many of whom I am still friends with and still see today. Those forum days were a brilliant laugh and a proper community (sadly steamrolled years later when Facebook muscled in and took over social media). I do miss that era.

I really liked this car; the 325i models from the E30/E36 era are still among my favourites. My only mishap was courtesy of another driver in a Vauxhall Tigra who changed lanes into me—denting the wing and knocking off the indicator and side moulding. I claimed on their insurance and got a cheque for £1,500. Result!

Eventually I sold it to someone in Tunbridge Wells for £3,150 and looking at it its history, it lived on until it was scrapped on 2nd Feb 2011 with over 200K miles!

Thankfully for the photo album, this was the era of camera phones—so I've actually got plenty of shots of this one.

Every year, thousands of cars in the UK are recalled due to safety or technical issues.

From faulty airbags and fire risks to windscreen wiper problems, recalls are there to keep drivers, passengers and other road users safe.

Recall repairs are usually carried out for free but it’s your responsibility to make sure your vehicle is roadworthy.

But there’s a problem: the system still relies heavily on paper letters and they don’t always reach the current driver.

🏎️ We’re proud to be sponsoring Mulberry Academy Hastings’s Go Kart through the STEM On Track programme. After visiting to see it up close, we couldn't be more impressed with what these students have built so far.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 - #𝟵 𝗩𝗮𝘂𝘅𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮

At 22yrs of age, the 9th instalment of my automotive journey landed me back in to a Vauxhall.

This time in a 1990 2.0 (115bhp) Vauxhall Calibra in Technical Grey. £850 well spent.

One of my favourite features was the fog lights hidden neatly in the headlights — subtle, clever and very early ’90s cool plus the wedge shape design, which still looks great even by today’s standards.

On my 2nd date with a girl, I treated the Calibra to an unscheduled off-road experience travelling back from the cinema in Ashford and beached the car on a large rock at the end of someone’s driveway.

I have rarely felt smaller than I did standing by the Calibra, rehearsing how to ask her dad for a favour at midnight.
There’s a special kind of humiliation that comes with admitting,
"𝘏𝘪, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘮𝘦—𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳. 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 20+ 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 4𝘟4 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧𝘧 𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘬?"

Thankfully, the Calibra was absolutely fine — no bodywork damage; just my man-pride neatly panel-beaten.

In truth, I was doing my best rally-driver impression on the B roads and ran out of talent. I floated the "a fox ran out" defence, delivered with all the conviction of a man standing in a ditch. Her dad’s look said it all.

That wasn’t the Calibra’s only humbling moment... When I was in Wells, Somerset I locked myself out the car while it was still running and spent over an hour listening to my own engine from the pavement, waiting for the RAC to arrive.

I kept the mods modest — just some 6x9 speakers paired with a Kenwood head unit — and in November 2003 I moved it on for £800. Not a profit, but a masterclass in humility, with half decent sound.
