🚗 Feels like we've gone back to the 90s this week! 🔧

It feels like we've travelled back in time at Brake-Fit this week! 😎

We've had a couple of seriously cool 90s cars in the workshop for repairs and maintenance, and we're definitely not complaining!

🔧 MAZDA MX-5 – BRAKE REPAIR 🔧

Another Mazda MX-5 back on the road and braking correctly! 🚗💨

This MX-5 came into us with an issue where the passenger-side rear brake was grabbing and getting excessively hot.

On strip-down, we found that the brake pads had become stuck in the pad carriers due to corrosion and lack of lubrication, preventing the brakes from operating correctly.

We carried out a full inspection of the rear braking system, including:

✅ Brake caliper inspection
✅ Sliding pin checks
✅ Brake pad carriers
✅ Brake discs and pads
✅ Full brake operation checks

Due to the condition of the braking components, we recommended replacing the rear brake discs and pads and addressing the cause of the binding.

Once the work was completed, we carried out checks and tests to make sure the new brakes were operating correctly, with the braking system now working as it should. 👍

This is another good example of why it's important to have your brakes checked if you notice a wheel getting hot, brakes grabbing, pulling, unusual smells or uneven brake wear.

🚨 WHY REGULAR BRAKE CHECKS ARE SO IMPORTANT 🚨
This is why we recommend having your brakes checked regularly — not just waiting for your MOT.
These brake pads were removed from a 2017 Land Rover Discovery.

While you might think everything was fine because the pad on the side with the wear sensor still had plenty of material left.
However, on the opposite side, where there was no wear sensor, the brake had been binding, causing the pad to wear unevenly and eventually damage the brake disc.

🔴 The result?

The vehicle now required new brake discs and pads, when catching the problem earlier could potentially have meant simply replacing the pads and addressing the sticking/binding brake components.
Things such as sticking slider pins, calipers or other brake components can cause brakes to bind and wear unevenly. Regular inspections can help identify these problems before they become more expensive repairs.

⚠️ DON'T RELY ON YOUR MOT ALONE

An MOT is a test of the vehicle at the time of the test !!! And not a service , Passing an MOT doesn't mean that your brakes, tyres or other components will remain in the same condition for the next 12 months.
Your vehicle could travel thousands of miles and experience all sorts of conditions between MOTs.
That's why regular servicing and brake inspections are so important.

🌧️ WINTER CAN BE PARTICULARLY HARD ON BRAKES

Road salt, grit, water and general weather conditions can contribute to brake components becoming stiff or sticking.
A vehicle that has been stood for a couple of weeks, perhaps while you've been away on holiday, can also develop brake problems.
This is particularly worth remembering with electric and hybrid vehicles. Regenerative braking means the conventional friction brakes may not be used as frequently, but that doesn't mean they don't need checking.

In fact, regular brake inspections are just as important.

🔧 A proper inspection can identify:

• Uneven brake-pad wear
• Binding brakes
• Sticking slider pins
• Caliper problems
• Disc wear or damage
• Corrosion
• Other brake-related issues

Catching a problem early can often save you money in the long run and, most importantly, help keep your vehicle safe.
