Is the new Land Rover Defender still a farm vehicle?

The man who's sold Defenders since 1988 says no. Andrew Harrison-Smith reckons the new Defender has priced itself out of the job — too expensive for livestock farmers, too heavy on the land, and beaten on running cost by quad bikes and side-by-sides.

Want a genuine V8 Land Rover Defender 90 with under 8,000 miles? This Landmark Edition is one of the best you'll find.

First registered in 2015, dry-stored from new and with just 7,898 verified miles, this Defender 90 Landmark started life as a factory short-wheelbase 4-seater in Corris Grey Metallic with a Santorini Black roof, arches and detailing. Then it got the full Nene Overland V8 treatment.

Under the bonnet is a 5.3-litre V8 petrol pushing 355 BHP through a silky 8-speed automatic, fitted by our workshop in October 2023. Backing it up: a rear limited-slip diff, heavy-duty drive shafts, full EBC performance brakes on grooved and vented discs, and multi-height air suspension on premium Fox shocks. It sits on 18" gloss black Sawtooth alloys wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrains.

Inside, it's had full sound deadening throughout, a Stinger Apple CarPlay screen with reverse camera, and a Rivolve body-coloured dash and gauge pods, on top of the factory Landmark pack — black leather heated seats, heated screen, air conditioning. Plus a proper security fit: active Scorpion Tracker, deadlocks on all three doors, and security hinges throughout.

This is a rare one — a genuine low-mileage Landmark with a professionally built V8 drivetrain. To build a similar V8 today would cost around £150,000. The cherished plate LM65 DEF stays with it, and it's currently off-site, so viewing is by private appointment only.

Grasmere Green. The colour that stops people every single time.

This started life as our demo truck. 5.3 V8, manual gearbox, Santorini Black hardtop. Then a customer drove it and refused to give it back. He wanted it as a soft top. We obliged. Eight speed auto, full retrim, converted to open air. 355 horsepower underneath, soft top above.

The one next to it still has its 2.4 TDci. 136 horsepower. Same colour, completely different animal.

Looking for a retro classic Defender 90 with genuine low mileage? This Zambezi Silver 90 County Station Wagon has just landed.

Only 59,350 miles from new, this 4-seater 90 County comes with factory Land Rover electric windows and central locking, and it's had the full Rivolve retro classic treatment in our workshop.

That means a new galvanised bumper, Alpine White roof, HD retro classic wheels wrapped in new 235/85 R16 tyres, a 2016 Heritage Le grille with Land Rover plaque, and a full set of Melvill & Moon sand canvas seat covers throughout — all included, all prepared and detailed to our usual standard.

Zambezi Silver is one of the best colours on a retro classic build, and against the Alpine White roof and galv bumper it really works. This is a proper usable classic Defender 90 — low miles, four seats, ready to go.

We can also take these builds further: full dashboard respray in satin silver with sand canvas dash pods, if you want to make it your own.

It started as a bespoke off-road camping build and honestly, once you see the detail, the number starts to make sense. iKamper hardshell roof tent, a full kitchen with a gas cooker, sink and fridge, and an interior finished like a high-end motorhome. It sleeps four and runs off-grid on solar.

Then it gets clever — the bed lifts to the roof so you can drive motorbikes straight into the back, and there's a hidden shower for when you come home covered in mud.
