italicar is a small family business, run by brothers Luke and Kirk Miller. Our father managed a successful Alfa Romeo and Fiat main dealership throughout the 80s and 90s, so neither of us grew up wanting to be train-drivers! With the soundtrack of our early years provided by a symphony of Lampredi twin-cams and Busso V6s, we were powerless to escape the obsession. Our family car history reads like a Top Trumps' pack of Italian automotive history; Alfa Romeo GTAs, 155s, Spiders, GTVs, Fiat 124s, Coupes, Barchettas, a Lancia Delta HF integrale and many, many more. Even if we weren't working with Italian cars for a living, we'd still be buying them! to our Alfa Romeo GT buyer's guide - written back at the start of 2020, when we warned that "even the newest GT is now ten years old, so rust is a consideration."

That same car is now pushing seventeen.

Which leaves the GT in an odd sort of limbo. It hasn't yet been welcomed into the canon of proper Alfa modern classics (nobody's putting one on a magazine cover next to a GTV6 just yet) but it's long past the point of holding any value as an ordinary used car.

And that, if you're buying, is brilliant news.

Bertone styling. 156 underpinnings. A boot you can actually use and three seats in the back that fit real humans. And in 3.2 V6 form, the very last car ever fitted with Giuseppe Busso's engine. The value for money right now is frankly absurd.

Just go in with your eyes open. Check the belt history, check the sills where people have jacked them up wrong, and get it on a ramp if you can.

We don't need to waste AI credits and GPU power for a 1980s nostalgia hit here at italicar.

We just need to look at the minty new headlining in the Lancia Beta Coupe, fresh from the upholsterers. Not sure we're going to go full on 80s with fuzzy dice, window louvers and a graphic equaliser blinking in the dash though.

This is now the really fun part of any resto - putting it all back together again and slowly recreating a complete car once again.

I suppose we ought to be pleased when we take a deposit on a sales car?

But accepting that this lovely Portofino Blue 20V VIS will soon be leaving us and winging its way to the new owner...leaves us conflicted. It's a stunning example, so it's exciting to know that another Coupe enthusiast will get to enjoy it but, this one is SO nice, we genuinely don't know when we'll find another to compare...

We're always on the look-out though, so watch this space for the next collector-grade Coupe we fall in love with and stupidly decide to sell on!

This week from the vault: our deep dive into the Lampredi Twin Cam, written seven years ago.

Modern manufacturers would like you to know that extracting big performance from small displacement engines is very cutting-edge. Aurelio Lampredi would like you to know he was doing it in the 1950s with a slide rule and absolutely no cheat codes; no turbo, no hybrid assist, no software maps. Just engineering genius.

Still a great engine. Still ahead of its time. Still one of our favourites.

What's the rarest Alfa Romeo on UK roads right now?

There's around 150-ish 147 GTAs taxed and in use, slightly more than the 156 GTA's count of 117. The 4C is comparatively common as muck (well over 200), and the Giulia Quadrifoglio? You can't move for them; there's over 1,300 of those things knocking about.

To get really rare, then, you need to be looking at the humble 146. Apparently only 34 of the angular 4-door sibling of the 145 remain with us.

We look after a few, with this one in this week, but it will probably be a while before we see the next one. And we highly doubt another will turn up with tan leather interior!

Another new item added to the parts section of the website recently.

Reproduction radio blanking plates for the dashboard of a Lancia Fulvia coupe, complete with Fulvia script badge. We have both LHD and RHD versions in stock, and can also offer the panel in wood as well as the OEM plastic.

We designed and created these ourselves. All made in the UK and as used on past italicar Fulvia restorations.

🗣️ YOU SPOKE, WE LISTENED 👂

When we first advertised our 1977 Alfetta 2000 GT, we heard a chorus of: "lovely car… shame it's been lowered."

Fair point, well made. So we've put it back to standard ride height. It sits properly now, and honestly, we'll have to admit it looks all the better for it. We've also dug out some original chrome bumpers if the more stripped back look doesn't suit the new owner.

And while we were at it, we've dropped the price too. Why? It's far too beautiful an example to be sitting in our showroom gathering dust - it needs to find a new owner who will enjoy it, and drive it.

Because it is a genuinely rare thing. A US-market 2000 GT 'Sprint Veloce', supplied new to California and kept there for 41 years. There's no rot anywhere; the factory spot welds are still on the inner arches. Converted back to European carb spec, lightened flywheel, fully rebuilt gearbox, sorted by respected classic Alfa man Richard Drake. Rosso red over tan leather, 20,120 miles on the speedo', with the Arese Certificato di Origine to back up its history.
