1071 Cooper S Project.

I didn't get to do the completion photos today, so I'll do them on Monday.
Today I was removing the old top dash rail and fitting the correct one.
A later model panel had been fitted too high, plus the demister vents are in a different place on the later models. You can see this in the first picture.
Pic 2, shows that it wasn't a simple clamp up and spotweld job. The spotweld fl**ge needed some correction. The piece of aluminium has a scribe line, which indicates how big that fl**ge should be.
Pic 3, shows it correctly located and spotwelded.

1071 Cooper S Project.

The rear parcel shelf is all repaired, including a new fl**ge where it spotwelds to the rear panel.
The boot catch bracket had been "altered" to suit poorly fitting panels, so I've repaired that.
The bulkhead has a whole new fl**ge all along the bottom where it joins the bootfloor/seat base, and all the excess holes were closed up.
Its mostly welded back in place now.
I hope to show completion pictures tomorrow, to end the week on a high

1071 Cooper S Project.

I finished off the last few little details on the passenger side today, then repaired some holes on the cant rail above the passenger door.
The rear parcel shelf was in bad shape after the rear panel had been replaced, and the bulkhead needs a new fl**ge welding along the bottom, as can be seen in pic 7. The easiest way to do this is remove them both, do the repairs and refit. I'm part way through this and will finish it off later this week.
I have family things going on tomorrow, so won't be posting now until Thursday

1071 Cooper S Project.

I only have one pic to show today.
On Friday I finished the driver's side of the 1071 and began working on the passenger side.
Between an appointment, popping home to sort something out, and an early finish because Im out tonight, I fitted the outer A panel, welded up the quarter panel, began the final spotwelding and a few little odds

1071 Cooper S Project.

I finally managed to beat the brand new driver's side door into submission and I'm happy with the result.
I had to cut the window frame and raise it up 1/8" to make a nice gap and to seal against the rubber.
The catch and rubber are fitted, the outer A panel is fitted, the vertical join just behind the door aperture is welded and cleaned up, and its all spotwelded together.

I've turned the car around now so I can do the same on the passenger side.

I've fitted the new door skin to the restored frame and I'm happy with the first fit, so on Monday I can get into fitting the outer A panel.

A long time ago, when I still worked for Aston Martin, this feature was done in the AML news.

14.25second quarter mile was fast for the time, but it got faster by 1.25 seconds over the years. It needs to be atleast 1.5 seconds faster now.

Notice they doctored my hair in the picture because my "Robert Smith" hair style was too scruffy to send the newsletter out to all the customers🤣😂

1071 Cooper S Project.

The new brand new driver's door didn't fit very well, as I said before, which is why I used one of my spare ones for alignment. Today, I managed to make it fit quite reasonable.
I had to give it a big twist, dress the front bottom corner to bring it out to the level of the doorstep, and stretch the front edge to make the gap to the outer A panel nice.
The window frame will need a little bit of work to tighten the gap once the outer A panel is finished.
Yesterday, I made the repairs on the bonnet and began restoring the passenger side door frame, which I finished off this morning. It has a new drip channel and bottom section now, ready for the new skin

1071 Cooper S Project.

The 1071 S has it's new face. I decided on Friday to replace the front panel, so made all the usual corrections on it for the month and year of original manufacture. I am very glad I did too.
The front panel that was on it (as I said last week, was not the original) had the spotweld fl**ges moved slightly, and they were a bit moth eaten from poor plug welding.
With this front panel fitted, it all just slipped into place with no real effort, so it certainly saved the owner a good few hours of labour, which was far more cost effective.
As usual, once clamped in place and I was happy with the alignment, I slipped the assembly off to spotweld the panels together on the trestles.
It's now permanently fitted, so next job is to repair a few little spots on the bonnet, then the doors

The diary opened up yesterday morning, and today it is closed again, with some nice sounding projects.

I will be replying to emails over the next few hours to offer slots and organise timings.

As always, I really appreciate so many people wanting me to do their work for them. I never imagined my hobby could become such a successful little business, with such high demand.

1071 Cooper S Project.

A quick update from tonight's earlier post.

The full skirt front valance is now done.
I cut the section from the old panel, flattened the lip on the new panel, and clamped them together to mark out my cut line and butt weld.
Once clamped back in place, I tacked it up, welded it up, and linished the top off for a smooth finish.
There were a couple of small undercuts to tap up, but nothing major
