Great post๐Ÿ‘ I wish more instructors thought like this.

Someone asked me recently: "Isn't a driving instructor just a driving instructor?"
Fair question. Here's the honest answer: no, not quite.
A standard driving instructor teaches a syllabus โ€” mirror, signal, manoeuvre, repeat, refine. That's a good and necessary skill, and most learners thrive with it exactly as it is.
Specialist instruction starts somewhere else entirely. It starts with a question: what does this learner need in order to process information, manage the car, and feel safe enough to actually learn? For a Deaf learner, that might mean restructuring every explanation around visual and signed communication instead of verbal instruction. For a learner with ADHD, it might mean shorter, tightly-structured lesson blocks instead of a long unbroken session. For someone with a physical disability, it might mean the entire vehicle needs adapting before a lesson plan means anything at all.
None of this is "extra" or "special treatment." It's just teaching that starts from the person in front of you rather than a one-size-fits-all script. The syllabus (the actual driving test standard) doesn't change. The route to get there does.
I've hear many times from learners who'd been told, directly or indirectly, that driving "probably wasn't for them." It usually was. It just needed a different way in.
What's one thing you wish more instructors understood before working with a learner who's a bit different from the "average" pupil?
