🚗 Is the Government trying to force older cars off the road? I don’t think so…

There’s a UK Government consultation running that could have a big impact on the motor trade, particularly around DPF, EGR, AdBlue and catalytic converter deletes.

I’ve seen people suggesting this is another attempt to get older petrol and diesel vehicles off the road.

Having read it, that’s not how I see it.

The Government specifically identifies:

🔧 DPF/GPF deletes
🔧 EGR deletes, including software deletes
🔧 AdBlue/SCR deletes
🔧 Catalytic converter removal

The proposal is essentially that if a vehicle was built to a particular emissions standard, its emissions-control system should continue to operate to that standard.

They’re NOT saying an older vehicle must meet today’s standards. A Euro 5 remains Euro 5.

One sentence caught my attention:

“Our focus will likely be upstream.”

To me, that suggests the real target is the businesses deliberately removing or electronically disabling these systems.

And personally, I welcome that.

We invest heavily in training, equipment and diagnostics to find the actual cause of emissions faults.

We’ve all heard:

“My AdBlue system needs £1,500 of repairs, but someone can map it out for £250.”

Why should garages diagnosing and repairing vehicles properly compete with someone simply switching the problem off?

However, there MUST be a distinction between a genuine fault and deliberately defeating the system.

DPFs block. NOx sensors fail. EGR valves fail. AdBlue systems fail. Catalysts deteriorate.

Motorists need a reasonable opportunity to have faults diagnosed and repaired.

Could tougher enforcement make some older vehicles uneconomical to repair? Yes.

But that’s different from deliberately legislating older cars off the road.

My view?

👍 Crack down on DPF, EGR, AdBlue and catalyst deletes.

But make sure the law clearly distinguishes between genuine failure and deliberate defeat.

The consultation closes 6 September 2026.

🧹 “Your workshop is always so clean!”

We hear this all the time from customers, suppliers and other people in the trade…

Meanwhile, I’m walking around thinking:

“This place is FILTHY!” 😂

I suppose it all comes down to standards.

For me, a clean and organised workshop isn’t just about appearances. If we’re expecting our technicians to work to a high standard, look after customers’ vehicles and take pride in what they do, then the environment they work in should reflect that.

And apparently my definition of clean might be slightly different to everyone else’s. 🤦‍♂️

So… sleeves up.

Roll on the clean-up! 🧹🧽

The rear brakes were due some attention on this Ford Transit 👀

One of the inner brake pads had worn right down to the metal due to a sticking handbrake cable. Left like this, it can damage the brake disc and compromise braking performance.

Here's what we replaced:
• Rear brake pads
• Rear brake discs
• One handbrake cable

If your vehicle is making grinding noises, pulling when braking, or your handbrake doesn't feel quite right, don't ignore it. Getting it checked early can save you money and keep you safe on the road.

🔧 FORD KA PROJECT – SO, WHAT HAVE WE ACTUALLY BOUGHT? 👀

Following on from our last video, we’ve now got the little Ford Ka up on the ramp for a proper look over.

The previous owner decided they didn’t want to invest the money needed to bring it back up to scratch, so we bought it from them.

Now it’s time to find out exactly what that means…

And we’re not just looking at “what does it need to pass an MOT?”

We want to know what it needs to get it up to our Gold Standard — a car that’s mechanically right, properly maintained and something we’d genuinely be happy to put our name to.

So in this video we’re going through it from front to back, checking what needs attention and starting to build the list. 🔍

Some things are expected on a car of this age.

Some might surprise us.

And the list might end up being a little longer than we hoped! 😂

🎥 Have a watch and see what we find.

Then tell us…

Would you fix everything, or would you have walked away from this one? 👇

🚗 WE’VE BOUGHT A FORD KA… BUT WHAT HAVE WE GOT PLANNED FOR IT? 👀

This little Ford Ka came into us needing a fair bit of TLC.

After assessing it, the customer decided they weren’t prepared to invest the money needed to get it back into tip-top condition.

Fair enough — sometimes the cost of putting an older car right simply doesn’t make sense for the owner.

But rather than see it disappear off to auction or end up being run into the ground…

We bought it. 😁

And we’ve got a plan.

Those who know us will probably realise that simply throwing the bare minimum at it to scrape it through an MOT isn’t really our style.

We’re going to give this little Ka some attention and bring it back up to a standard we’d be happy to put our name to.

But here’s the question…

🤔 What do you think we’ve got planned for it?

A cheap runaround?
A courtesy car?
A project for one of the apprentices?
Something completely different? 👀

Drop your guesses in the comments — all will be revealed!

VW Crafter in for an MOT fail due to poor parking brake efficiency, and it didn't take long to find out why. 👀

Once we stripped the rear brakes, we found:
• Missing pad shims
• Brake pads sitting out of line with the discs
• Brake discs worn below the service limit
• Seized calipers, with one leaking brake fluid as soon as we tried to wind it back

The fix? ✅
New brake pads, discs, calipers, shims and slider bushes fitted, restoring the braking system to how it should be.

Sometimes an MOT failure is the first sign of a much bigger problem. This Crafter left with safe, reliable brakes and ready to get back to work.

A little honesty about the person behind Intelligent Auto…

Many of you know me as the bloke who’s obsessed with fixing cars properly. What you might not know is that I’ve recently been clinically diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD.

It hasn’t changed who I am. It’s simply helped me understand why I am the way I am.

For years I thought I was just a bit different. Disorganised. A scatterbrain. Someone who could spend hours solving an incredibly complex problem but struggle with something that should take five minutes.

As part of my assessment, I was told I scored in the 99th centile for solving predominantly visual problems.

Suddenly, my career made perfect sense.

Whether I’m diagnosing a complicated electrical fault or carrying out a routine service, my brain is constantly looking for detail.

Are we following the manufacturer’s repair procedures? Are we using the correct specification oil and quality parts? Have we checked everything? Could we do this better?

That’s why we’ve always believed in testing, not guessing, using the right parts, following proven repair methods and never cutting corners.

The downside? If you’ve met me, you might think I’m a bit blunt, opinionated or very direct. You’re probably right! But please don’t mistake that for not caring.

If I challenge something, it’s because I genuinely believe there’s a better, safer or more professional way of doing it. My passion has always been getting the repair right, not winning an argument.

When you leave your vehicle with us, you’re not just trusting us with a car. You’re trusting us with the safety of you and your family.

That’s a responsibility I’ll never take lightly.

Maybe now I understand why I’ve always cared so much about doing things properly. Different isn’t broken.

Sometimes being wired differently is exactly what you want from the person repairing your car.

This Jaguar XE Ingenium Diesel Sent Me Down a Rabbit Hole... 🕳️🔧

What looked like a straightforward non-start quickly turned into a much bigger diagnostic challenge. At first, we were convinced we had a fuelling issue...

✔️ Fuel pressure was good
✔️ The engine sounded healthy while cranking
✔️ The injectors were firing

Everything pointed one way, but the real cause was something completely different.

Follow the diagnostic process from start to finish as we work through the clues, rule out the obvious, and eventually uncover the mechanical fault behind this 2016 Jaguar XE Ingenium Diesel's crank, no-start condition.
