Why Won't Garages Fit Customer-Supplied Parts?

It's one of the questions we're asked most, and the answer often surprises people.

Many customers assume garages refuse to fit customer-supplied parts because they want to make money on the parts.

The real reasons are far more important: safety, liability, quality control and warranty.

We Can't Guarantee the Quality of the Part.

Even if a part is brand new and still in its original packaging, we have no way of knowing its history. We don't know where it was purchased, whether it's genuine or an unknown aftermarket copy, whether it's been stored correctly, or even whether it has previously been fitted to another vehicle and returned.

Unfortunately, counterfeit and sub-standard vehicle parts are becoming increasingly common. UK Government guidance warns that fake vehicle parts can fail prematurely, damage vehicles and, in some cases, pose a serious safety risk to drivers and other road users. That's not a risk we're prepared to take with our customers' vehicles.

The Correct Part Isn't Always the Right Part.

Modern vehicles are far more complex than many people realise. Two cars that appear identical can require completely different parts depending on the engine code, VIN number, production date or optional factory equipment.

It's not unusual for an online parts catalogue to list several similar-looking components, only one of which is actually correct for the vehicle. If the wrong part arrives, the repair can't continue, the workshop schedule is disrupted and the customer is left without their vehicle while the correct part is sourced.

When we supply the parts ourselves, we use trusted trade suppliers who VIN-check components before they're dispatched, greatly reducing the chances of delays or incorrect parts.

Warranty Isn't As Simple As Many People Think.

When we supply and fit a part, we're able to stand behind the entire repair. If a genuine manufacturing fault develops, we deal directly with our supplier, who can usually replace the part quickly and, in many cases, contribute towards the labour involved in fitting the replacement.

However, if a customer supplies the part, the situation becomes much more complicated. If it fails after installation, who pays to remove it? Who pays to fit another one? Who covers any recovery costs if the vehicle breaks down?

These situations can quickly become frustrating for everyone involved, which is why many garages simply choose not to take on that risk.

It's Often Not Actually Cheaper.

Many people assume they'll save a significant amount by purchasing parts online. Sometimes they do, but not always.

Professional garages work with established motor factors every day and often receive competitive trade pricing, fast delivery, technical support and manufacturer-backed warranties that simply aren't available through many online retailers.

When you ask a garage to supply the part, you're paying for much more than the physical component. You're paying for the confidence that the correct part has been selected, that it's backed by a reputable supplier, and that the garage can fully support the repair if something goes wrong.

In the Customer's Eyes - Garages Carry the Liability.

Once we've fitted a component, customers quite understandably see it as our repair.

If that part develops a fault six months later, most people don't contact the website they bought it from. They return to the garage that carried out the work.

That can leave the garage responsible for diagnosing whether the problem is the part itself, the installation or something else entirely. It's a situation that can easily lead to disputes, despite the garage having had no control over the quality or source of the component in the first place.

The UK Government's guidance on counterfeit vehicle parts specifically advises motorists not to bring their own parts to a garage, highlighting the potential safety, warranty and liability issues that can arise.

Our Reputation Depends on Every Repair.

At the end of the day, our reputation is built on carrying out repairs properly and standing behind our work.

If we can't confidently guarantee the quality of the components being fitted, we can't confidently guarantee the repair as a whole.

That's why many independent garages across the UK have a policy of only fitting parts they've sourced themselves. In fact, an industry survey found that 69% of UK garages refuse to fit customer-supplied parts, while a further 29% said they previously did but have since stopped because of the problems it created.

It's About Peace of Mind, Not Profit.

We completely understand that customers are looking to keep repair costs down, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

However, our priority is making sure your vehicle is repaired safely, correctly and reliably the first time. By supplying trusted, correctly specified parts ourselves, we can stand behind both the component and our workmanship, giving you complete peace of mind.
