THE HIDDEN SIDE OF DRIVING INSTRUCTION

Something I think is worth sharing, particularly for learners and parents navigating the driving test.

Every week driving instructors receive messages from people asking if we can take them to test in a few days, despite never having met them before.

Many people do not realise why the answer is usually no.

Learning to drive is not simply about getting someone through a test. It is a process that often takes weeks, months, and sometimes longer. During that time we watch nervous learners arrive with shaking hands, overwhelmed by busy roads and struggling with confidence. We see the setbacks, the frustrations, the financial sacrifices, and the determination it takes to keep going.

We build relationships with our pupils. We get to know them, understand how they learn, and work hard to develop not only their driving skills but also the confidence and judgement needed to stay safe for life.

To parents, you are trusting us with one of the most important responsibilities imaginable. You are placing your son or daughter in our care and expecting us to help them become safe, responsible drivers. That responsibility is something good instructors take very seriously.

When a pupil becomes test ready, we do everything we can to help them secure a test. We rearrange diaries, speak to colleagues, and spend time trying to make things work. What we will not do is put someone forward who is not ready.

Driving tests are not simply another appointment in the diary. They involve public safety, examiner safety, the reputation of the instructor, and most importantly the future safety of the candidate.

When someone contacts us saying, “Can you take me to test in three days because my instructor isn’t available?” it often raises concerns. In many cases the real issue is not availability. It is readiness.

Most instructors already have waiting lists and committed pupils who have been patiently waiting their turn. Cancelling those lessons to take an unknown candidate to test would be unfair to the people who have invested their time and trust in us.

Driving instructors are often working long hours, managing busy schedules, and doing everything they can to support their pupils. We understand how important a driving licence is. We know it can change lives, create opportunities, and provide independence.

The best advice is simple.
Find an instructor you trust.
Commit to the learning process.
Take the recommended lessons.
Practise where possible.

If you are unhappy with your instructor, find one who suits you better.

Most importantly, focus on becoming a safe and confident driver rather than simply finding the quickest route to a test certificate.

There is no shortcut to experience.
A driving test lasts around 40 minutes.

The skills you learn need to last a lifetime.
