Many people ask us why we're giving away our beloved van when we've had so many incredible adventures in it.
The answer is simple: creating beautiful campervans isn't just our job—it's our passion, our livelihood, and something that's truly in our blood. We spend countless hours, late nights, and weekends designing and building dream vans for customers who are fortunate enough to invest in a luxury, handcrafted conversion. From the outside, it probably looks like a wonderful lifestyle, and in many ways it is. But the reality is that it's also incredibly demanding—both physically and mentally.
As a small husband-and-wife team, we can only build around three to four vans each year. Expanding the business would mean sacrificing the unique craftsmanship and personal touch that make every Character Campers build special. Each van is completely bespoke and designed around the customer's individual requirements, which makes scaling difficult without losing what we love most about what we do.
So why give Drift away when we need it so much ourselves?
Last year, our lives were turned upside down when I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Since then, we've been navigating appointments, uncertainty, and difficult decisions about treatment. I will need either surgery or radiation therapy, both of which involve a significant recovery period.
Because Character Campers is just the two of us, when one of us can't work, neither of us can really continue as normal. We are a true partnership, and one doesn't function without the other. Unfortunately, that means both of our income streams will effectively stop while we take the time needed for treatment and recovery.
The idea behind this competition is to raise enough money to help us continue moving forward. We have already purchased another van through the business, and our hope is to build it, then spend a month or so travelling through Europe before my operation. We desperately need some time to decompress, reset, and make memories together before facing what's ahead.
The funds raised will also give us the financial breathing space needed when the time comes for my operation early next year, allowing us to focus on recovery without the immediate pressure of returning to work. Our goal is simply to heal, recover properly, and come back ready to build more dream vans for our customers.
This isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. Believe me, running a competition like this is far harder than most people imagine. It takes an enormous amount of time and effort, especially on social media, all while we're trying to manage my health challenges and continue building customer vans to keep the business running.
That's also why we've chosen the charities we have. Any excess funds raised from the competition will be donated to causes that have become much closer to our hearts than we ever expected. Giving back has always been part of who we are.
At the end of the day, we love simple things. We love travelling, spending time together, and living life on the road. We don't need much—just a van, each other, and the opportunity to keep doing what we love.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story. If you've entered the competition, thank you so much for your support—it genuinely means the world to us. If you haven't entered yet but would like to support us on our journey, there's still time by clicking the link below.
