🚨 DPF FAULT? DON’T ASSUME IT JUST NEEDS CLEANING! 🚨

The number of vehicles we’ve seen lately with split boost pipes, leaking intercoolers or cracked inlet manifolds is unbelievable.
We regularly receive phone calls saying:

🗣️ “My DPF needs cleaning.”

But once we carry out proper diagnostics and connect the vehicle to our smoke-testing machine, the real problem is often a boost leak.
A boost leak can cause:
❌ Loss of power
❌ Excessive smoke and soot
❌ Poor fuel economy
❌ Engine-management lights
❌ DPF and EGR-related fault codes
❌ Frequent or failed regenerations
❌ Limp mode

Cleaning the DPF without fixing the underlying fault means the problem will usually return.

Mercedes X-Class in today for the CnS treatment 🔧💻
This one came to us with an emissions-related fault, so we carried out full diagnostics, got the issue resolved and then finished it off with a Stage 1 remap. 🚀
Stage 1 Gains:
🔥 Power: 190 BHP ➡️ 210 BHP (+20 BHP)
💪 Torque: 450 Nm ➡️ 500 Nm (+50 Nm)

This Honda Civic came into CnS Remapping with an Air/Fuel (A/F) sensor fault causing the engine management light to make an appearance.

🔧 ENGINE LIGHT ON & OFF – HERE’S WHY! 🔧

This vehicle came to us with an engine management light that had been coming on and going back off.

Rather than just clearing the fault codes and sending it on its way, we carried out proper diagnostics to find out what was actually causing the problem.

During our checks we found a crack around the DPF weld, with clear soot build-up around the joint.

💨 That soot is a tell-tale sign that exhaust gases have been escaping from the DPF.

An exhaust leak around the DPF can affect the pressure readings the ECU relies on to monitor DPF operation. Depending on driving conditions and how much the leak affects the readings, this can contribute to intermittent engine management lights and DPF-related faults.

This is exactly why diagnostics aren't always about plugging a computer in and replacing whatever part a fault code mentions.

🔧 VW GOLF GTD – SOMETIMES THE BEST TUNE IS NO TUNE! 🔧

One of today’s jobs was this Volkswagen Golf GTD, running an EDC17 ECU.

I could have quite easily plugged into the OBD port, read the ECU and applied a Stage 1 tune. Quick and easy… but that isn’t always the right way to do the job.

Instead, I removed the ECU and carried out a full bench read. This gave me the complete ECU data rather than relying on a virtual/OBD read.

After checking the file, we discovered the Golf already had a Stage 1 tune plus additional solutions applied — and they’d actually been done to a decent standard.

So rather than selling the customer something they didn’t need, we charged a small fee to cover our diagnostic time and ECU reading, and left the existing calibration alone. 👍

Had I simply used an OBD/VR read and flashed another Stage 1 file over the top, the customer could have wasted their money and I could have created an unnecessary headache for myself.

💻 DON’T VR — JUST BENCH!

That’s something I’ve learned over many years doing this work. Even when removing an ECU is a bit of a nightmare, getting the full original ECU data and knowing exactly what you're working with is worth the extra effort in the long run.

Another Audi Q3 into CnS after an ABS fault was lighting up the dashboard and bringing up multiple fault codes.

After carrying out diagnostics, we got to the bottom of the issue and completed:

✅ ABS fault diagnosed & fixed
✅ Full service carried out
✅ Engine oil & filters replaced
✅ Full smoke test to check for any intake/boost leaks
✅ Vehicle health check
✅ Fluid levels checked & topped up
✅ Tyre pressures checked

This Vauxhall Antara 2.2 CDTi came in suffering with DPF issues.

Rather than just dealing with the DPF, we carried out a full diagnostic check to find what had caused the problem in the first place.

💨 Using our smoke tester, we found the culprit — a split intercooler pipe, causing a boost leak and contributing to the DPF issues.
