Best spooky canal boat holiday destinations this Oct half term
Autumn is a great time to explore Britain’s beautiful countryside on a canal boat, and there are dozens of family attractions to visit along the way.
Here are some of our top destinations this Halloween:
1. Take a ghost tour in Bath
From Bradford on Avon, it takes around 4 hours, passing through 1 lock, to reach moorings next to Sydney Gardens in Bath. From there, you can explore this UNESCO World Heritage city and book a Ghost Tour.
2. Explore 1,200 acres at Chirk Castle
On a short break break from Trevor you can cruise to Ellesmere & back, stopping off to visit Chirk Castle along the way. Over Oct half term there’s a special ‘Calan Gaeaf’ family trail to follow and discover folklore and curious stories connected with the castle and surrounding area.
3. Experience the Ghost Tour at National Waterways Museum
On a 4-night break from Bunbury in Cheshire, you can cruise the Shropshire Union Canal to the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port. This Oct half term the Museum will be hosting ghost tours searching for the Museum’s 6 ghosts.
4. Book a Ghost Tour at Shugborough Mansion
On short break from Great Haywood you can cruise through the Staffordshire countryside to Fradley. You can stop off along the way to visit the National Trust’s Shugborough Estate where Oct half term special events include ghost tours (29-31 Oct) and Halloween hunt trail.
5. Take a Ghost Walk in Stratford-upon-Avon
From Wootton Wawen you can cruise along the Stratford Canal to Shakespeare’s Stratford. There you can moor up in Bancroft Basin in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon and take a Sinister Stratford Ghost Walk.
6. Watch out for the phantom at Bingley Five Rise Locks
On 4-night break from Silsden, you can cruise the Leeds & Liverpool Canal to Saltaire, passing through the famous Bingley Five Rise Locks. When darkness falls, locals whisper of a spectral figure tending to the locks. This phantom boatman appears to be real until he mysteriously vanishes on approach.

Last weekend, our 25,000th passenger boarded Little Star (Seren Fach), and experienced a boat trip across the UNESCO World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct!
We presented Amelie, who had travelled to Trevor from Switzerland, with a special Pontcysyllte Aqueduct brass boat plaque to remember her trip.

FAQ's: Do your boats have WiFi?
Yes, we’ve installed internet hubs on all our boats. These hubs give you free unlimited WiFi access, connecting you to the internet from aboard your boat, signal permitting. They work in a similar way to a smartphone, so are at the mercy of signal strength, which is likely to be poor in rural areas.

FAQ's: Are there any electrical appliances I can’t bring?
Yes. Unlike at home, there is a limit to the power that is available on a narrowboat. Our canal boats have a device called an inverter, which converts the power from the on-board batteries into a 240-volt supply. The inverters have a power limitation of 1,000 watts, which excludes many domestic electrical appliances. Usually, the following are more than 1,000 watts and therefore are not permitted on our canal boats: kettles, irons, hairdryers, vacuum cleaners and any form of heaters.

FAQ's: Can I bring my hair straighteners?
Hair straighteners are usually less than 1,000 watts so you can charge them on our boats. The same applies to cool boxes, blenders and phone and computer chargers.

Our Luxury 67ft Hamilton Admiral Class narrow boat for up to 6 people is available to hire on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.
Hamilton has flexible accommodation which can be made up as:
- 3 doubles
- or 2 doubles and 2 singles
- or 1 double and 4 singles
There are 2 shower rooms.
This boat has a semi-traditional stern.

FAQ's: Can I bring my hair dryer?
Your narrowboat has a 12v electrical supply and a 12v hairdryer will be supplied on board as part of your boat inventory. No electrical appliance should be left plugged in unattended. Only use one appliance at a time. Wherever possible, run the narrowboat engine whilst using the appliance so that you are charging the batteries.

Experience a Halloween-themed boat trip across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct this October half term, 26 October to 1 November 2026.
The UNESCO World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain.
During our 45-minute-long return boat trips, you’ll travel across the aqueduct, experiencing amazing views of the Dee Valley, and hearing about local ghost stories.
Our Halloween-themed trips will depart daily at 11am, 12 noon, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm from Canal Wharf, Trevor, Llangollen LL20 7TT.
Adult tickets are £10 each, children (aged under 16) are £6.
Family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) are £25 each.
A Halloween treat for children is included in the ticket price.
Book in advance online or buy them on the day, subject to availability. We accept card or cash payments.
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the boat trip departs.

FAQ's: Can I charge my mobile phone?
Yes. Our boats have 240 volt 3-pin sockets powered by the on-board batteries. Some of our boats also have USB ports. Only charge devices when the engine is running to avoid draining the boat’s batteries.

FAQ's: Do you provide life jackets?
Buoyancy aids are available on arrival at the boatyard. They are not automatically provided as they have to be individually sized for each narrowboat crew member. We keep a range of sizes to suit adults and children so please request buoyancy aids when making your booking.
