The Grapes Hotel has been a well-known landmark in the village of Springholm for generations. Situated on the historic A75 route through Galloway, the hotel has long served travellers, locals and visitors passing through the village. Springholm itself dates back to the late 18th century and developed as an important coaching and trading settlement.
It's always rewarding to uncover the original stonework on buildings like this. Beneath years of paint and repairs lies the craftsmanship of the masons who built these properties centuries ago. The transformation not only improves the appearance of the building but also helps preserve it for future generations by allowing trapped moisture to escape naturally.

This property was suffering from damp issues caused by layers of paint trapping moisture and preventing the stone from breathing. We have carefully sandblasted the building to remove the paint and expose the original stonework once again.

The process has also highlighted another likely cause of the damp problems — cement pointing. Cement can trap moisture within traditional stone buildings, leading to further damage over time. This will now be removed and replaced with breathable lime mortar, allowing the building to naturally breathe as intended. 👌

This little cottage, built in 1892 on the outskirts of Dumfries, is currently undergoing renovation. Over the years it had been brushed with cement and repeatedly painted, trapping moisture and hiding the stunning original stonework beneath.

The window sills were carefully steam cleaned using our specialised stone cleaning machine, preserving both the sandstone and the character of the stonework.

The property has also been extended over time, with areas of render and brickwork added along the way. These sections will now be removed and replaced with matching stone to restore the cottage back to its original character. 😍

This farm building had been painted time and time again, trapping moisture within the stone and causing the paint to blister, crack, and fall away. The customer had grown tired of the constant repainting and the overall appearance of the building.

Now stripped back to its original stone, the building can breathe properly once again. Not only has it completely transformed the look of the property, but it has also provided a long-term solution with no more repainting required.

Bringing this property back to life the right way.
This gable end had been heavily coated in old, failing paint, trapping moisture and hiding the character of the original stonework beneath. Using controlled sandblasting with the correct pressure and media, we carefully removed the coatings without damaging the substrate.
As the layers came away, the natural stone was revealed—showcasing the craftsmanship and materials that had been hidden for years.
The walls are now ready for the next stage of restoration, allowing it to breathe properly again and ensuring a long-lasting finish.

This hidden gem in Dumfries and Galloway had been struggling with damp issues.
We carefully stripped back the paint to reveal the stunning original stonework beneath, allowing us to properly assess and pinpoint any underlying problems.
All existing cement will be removed and replaced with traditional lime, helping the building breathe as intended and ensuring a long-lasting finish.

It’s been an exciting week for Skye Blasting Services, working alongside Cubby’s Construction on the historic Annan Harbour project. We’re hopeful that this work will bring a lot of business and opportunity to the town.
This week, we began sandblasting the internal structural steel beams as part of the ongoing works. Health and safety remains a top priority in this environment, along with ensuring the correct handling and disposal of all waste materials.
There’s plenty more work to come on this project in the weeks ahead.
We’d also like to thank all our other customers for their patience while we carry out these works , we’ll be with you as soon as possible. Keep an eye out for further progress updates.
