New research has revealed a worrying gap between driver confidence and real-world vehicle readiness.
Many road users believe they are prepared for an emergency—but the reality tells a different story.
Their research found:
• 83% believe they are in full control of stopping distance.
• Only 6% correctly identify stopping distance in wet conditions at motorway speeds.
• 94% underestimate stopping distance risk.
• 42% believe they are better than average at handling emergencies.
• 38% experienced a near-miss in the last 12 months.
• Only 11% checked their tyres afterwards.
• 22% admitted they did nothing at all following a near miss.

The message is clear.
Confidence isn’t a safety strategy. Preparation is.

Tyre checks should be at the heart of basic car maintenance. Get into the habit of checking the correct pressure, looking for damage or unusual wear and making sure you have sufficient tread.

Once you’ve checked your tyres, there are other essentials every new driver should get to know:

🛞 Top up essential fluids
🛞 Keep an eye on your battery
🛞 Replace worn wiper blades
🛞 Test your lights
🛞 Keep your windscreen clear

One in four tells a story no trailer user should ignore. Towing-related breakdown incidents have risen to 4,830 annually, with tyre issues consistently representing 25%–28% of all breakdowns involving towed vehicles.

That means tyre maintenance needs to happen before the trailer joins the road, not after a problem brings the journey to a halt. Check pressures for the load, look carefully for bulges, cracks or embedded objects and make sure tread meets the legal minimum.

The trailer may follow behind. Its tyre safety shouldn’t be an afterthought.
