For sale 1938 Citroen Traction Avant Light 15

The traction avant, French for front-wheel drive, was designed by Andre Lefebvre and Flaminio Bertoni in late 1933/ early 1934. Arguably it is one of the most influential cars ever built. Mixing technical innovation with modern dynamics, it effectively set the template for all modern family cars.

This particular traction spent most of its life in Paris until it was imported to the UK in January 2020 by a Citroen specialist in Chipping Norton.

It received a full body restoration in the 1990’s, although there are some age related marks on the body it polishes up nicely and receives much attention when taken out, it should be noted that the passenger side front door & the drivers side rear door have been re-sprayed since, although the colour is very close it is not a perfect match, it has never bothered me and certainly people do not generally notice unless it is pointed out, I am just trying to give an honest account of the cars condition.

Many upgrades have been made such as, an engine swap for a later, more powerful DS 1941cc with a SU carburettor, reportedly making 75bhp, meaning this Citroen will cruise easily at 60mph and is capable of more for motorway driving thus keeping up with modern traffic. Front disc brakes to help stopping capability with the added power. It has 12-volt electrics, it uses a more modern alternator which facilitates the capacity to use the cigarette lighter style socket discretely tucked under the dashboard so that the owner can charge a sat nav or phone etc. Also discreetly fitted with indicators. It has been fitted with adjustable electronic power steering which truly makes it a delight to drive. A temperature gauge has also been fitted to the dashboard, and underneath the dashboard a modern type battery isolator has been fitted for added security, although all four door locks do actually work.

The underside is in exceptionally good condition, I would happily put it on a ramp for inspection. All tyres are in good condition including the spare with plenty of tread. The brakes work well and the steering gives you great confidence at speed. Test drives are of course welcome.

The interior is generally in good condition, I believe it was re-upholstered some time ago. The documented history suggests that the material used to re-upholster the interior was taken from the original owner’s mother’s curtains…. how very French. However, there is a tear in the headlining over the driver’s side “B pillar” and there are some marks on the front seats and door cards however, I dare say that a professional detailer may be able to clean them up.

There is a lovely story that one of the previous owners bestowed upon me, that this car was among other Citroen cars that were bricked up behind a false wall in the Citroen factory in Paris at the time of the German advance into France at the start of the second world war in an attempt to deny the Germans of any readily available transport. However, this is just a story, and I have no proof that it happened, nevertheless it makes for good conversation at classic car events! I truly believe that you will not find a better example for the price and that this car is well worth a look.

The asking price is £21,995.00 we would take a part exchange for another classic vehicle, we prefer pre-war but would consider anything old and interesting. We are located near the village of Aberchirder, Aberdeenshire. Viewing is highly recommended and delivery can be arranged at the buyer’s expense. Please call Edward on 07778 105168 to arrange a viewing, or email [email protected]

Yesterday we were asked to provide a classic car to support a Great Gatsby themed fund raiser in aid of Turriff Thistle FC. We were happy to oblige and went along with the latest addition to the TRC fleet.....

Formally Introducing Violet, our 1927 Rolls Royce 20hp. You may have seen that she has already appeared in the background of some of our more recent posts, as she has been in the workshop receiving a "top end" engine rebuild. We have wanted a 20hp for quite a while as we have worked on several in the past and its a marque that we are very familiar with, so we could not pass up the opportunity to buy this particular car when it came onto the market.

A big thanks to the ladies for posing for the photos, hope you had a great time!

In the workshop recently… we had a 1938 Frazer Nash BMW 328, this being one of only 46 made in right hand drive, making it quite a rarity.

The customer requested more space between the pedals, as you can see it was quite a tight fit. We modified the clutch and brake pedals which has added a few inches extra clearance which has greatly increased the drivability.

We were also tasked with making new wing deflectors, we had the glass cut locally and we made the stainless-steel fittings to match the rest of the cars look. The result was a very natural and original look.

To finish the look, a new hood was made by the amazingly talented Jo at Parkhead Upholstery.

What a fantastic machine, this particular BMW has a Bristol gearbox with overdrive, a must have upgrade and a real privilege to be able to drive, thanks to owner Chris for trusting us with it.

I wonder where this could be going 👀😂

In the workshop recently we had this lovely Morgan which came in for an inspection and to have the king pins replaced.

During our inspection we found oil leaks from the sump, differential and the front shock absorbers. Once we had replaced the king pins we rectified the oil leaks and just like that It's back with its owner in time for the good weather!

If you would like a second opinion on the condition of your classic car, please get in touch to find out how we can help.

Valerie's off on an adventure to start her new life across the pond in Tennessee, USA.

A sad day, Ted reckons she'll be his last 101 Land Rover. After owning many 101's of all the different variations, Valarie has been his favourite. Good luck to new owner Bill, we hope she brings you many smiles per gallon!

In the workshop recently we had this rare 1934 Morris Minor with a coach-built body, in with us to be recommissioned.

When you hear the name Morris Minor you might think of the 1950/60’s Morris Minor but did you know the name originated in the late 1920’s! William Morris recognised a need to build a small and cheap motor car to compete with the hugely successful Austin Seven so in 1928 Morris built the first prototype “Minor” and the rest is history!

This little Morris hasn’t seen the light of day in around 15 years and required a full recommission. We love recommissioning pre-war cars, you never quite know what you’re up against which makes the process that bit more interesting. It didn’t take long to get the engine running and we soon had it out for its first drive in 15 years. She was treated to the following…

- New Champion spark plugs
- New spark plug leads which were made in-house
- New Ignition coil
- New 6-volt battery
- New SU fuel pump
- Sump removed, cleaned and re-fitted with a new gasket
- Engine oil change
- Gearbox oil change
- Differential oil change
- A full new exhaust system made in-house.
- New tyres all round
- Brakes cleaned and adjusted & new wheel cylinders
- Carburettor stripped, cleaned, re-built and set up
- Radiator flushed and water ways in the block flushed out.

After our efforts she’s ready for another 91 years of motoring! She is a very original example retaining her sunshine roof and beautiful interior. Another lovely vintage car to grace the roads once again.

If you have a classic or vintage vehicle that you would like to have recommissioned, or require help with your own project then please get in touch to see how we can help.
