Boutique vs. Conglomerate Motor Oils

Every day, we are asked what “boutique” motor oils mean. The specifications speak for themselves, but the “how” and the “why” behind the product deserve more explanation.

Motor Milk™ is a boutique motor oil brand. In practice, that means our formulations and production batches are continuously evaluated and refined. We select base oils based on purity, quality, and performance, not simply on whichever feedstock happens to be cheapest on the global market at a given moment, to produce “set” formulas.

Large conglomerate products are typically produced according to fixed formulations and predetermined ratios. Base oils are then sourced according to availability and commercial efficiency. Our approach is different: we aim to improve every single batch.

The objective of our launch year was to achieve the right balance between exceptional additive performance, uncompromised base-oil quality, and demanding viscosity specifications. We pushed additive and anti-wear packages, like ZDDP, to high levels, without compromising on viscosity, allowing us to boast both some of the highest ZDDP but also viscosity specifications on the market. Now, we are taking the next step by pushing base-oil quality and ester content even further.

Our newest products will feature some of the highest ester content available on the market, if not the highest, as our in-house interrogations reveal most alternatives feature 2~3% ester content, at best!

For us, development does not stop once a formulation reaches the shelf. We have now built a bank with nearly 100 used samples, and identified small areas for improvement.

Studying all the spec sheets available we notice full specs and full data is never disclosed. We try our best to do so, specs are always a trade off, if you focus on high temperature stability, other specs like viscocities at lower temperatures may be a little compromised.
