UBC Supermileage was founded in 2001 by Mechanical Engineering students Rob Mahaffey and Brian Jung, with the vision of creating an environment for young engineers to test classroom theories against real-world engineering problems. In particular, UBC Supermileage strives to create vehicles with exceptional fuel efficiency, having set a world record in 2006 with 3,145 miles per gallon. Since then,
countless students have been involved with the team in multidisciplinary projects including mechanical design, aerodynamic simulation, composites fabrication, and electrical instrumentation. UBC Supermileage provides a means through which students are able to be creative, have fun, and gain valuable technical experience in engineering. Supermileage team members have had great success in securing co-op placements and full-time jobs after graduation. Co-op placements have included: Tesla, Laser Zentrum, Zaber Technologies, Nokia, Sierra Wireless, Avcorp, V-Tech, Canadian Space Agency (CSA), TRIUMF, Ford, Keen, Teleflex, Greenlight, Ballard Power Systems, and many more.
