Get Your Head Checked #2
Last week we showed you heads that failed. This week, here's how we bring them back.
This pair of Toyota V8 DOHC heads came in just to be resurfaced. When we looked closer, we found the valves weren't sealing either. When that happens, we tell you straight and give you the choice: have the extra work done, or leave it as is. It's always your call.
This customer went ahead. First we resurfaced the heads flat (before and after shown). Then we recut the seats. You can see a worn seat and the same seat after. The valves get refaced on the grinder. The first pic shows one not ground next to one that is. Then every port gets a vacuum test. Before the valve job, the vacuum gauge read about 7 inches. After, it reads about 27 inches. That's a head that seals.
