Wondering why the cost changes each year?
After an at-fault accident, you'll lose 6 SGI Safety Rating points.
If you have no other driving offences, you'll earn back 1 point each year, which is why the additional registration cost gradually gets smaller over time.
Example (based on $1,200 annual registration):

• Year 1: +$72

• Year 2: +$60

• Year 3: +$48

If your Safety Rating is already in the negative, different criteria and penalties apply, so your costs may be different from this example.

If you’re in an accident, take more pictures than you think you need.

Take photos of the damage, both vehicles, licence plates, where the vehicles ended up and anything else involved in the collision.

Someone can rear end you and deny what happened later. Or you could hit a deer, run it over and have damage at the rear of your vehicle questioned as part of the same claim.

In a situation like that, having photos showing the deer underneath the vehicle could be what proves the rear damage was part of the same accident, potentially saving you from paying for a $2,000 bumper or having to make a second claim.

When it comes to dealing with SGI, pictures matter.

If you're found 100% at fault, you'll lose 6 SGI Safety Rating points.
If you have no other driving offences, you'll earn back 1 point per year. If your driving record stays clean, those points will typically affect you for about 3 years.
Your Safety Rating also affects what you pay for vehicle registration. As you earn points back, the additional cost gradually decreases.
Example (based on $1,200 annual registration):

• Year 1: +$72

• Year 2: +$60

• Year 3: +$48
If your Safety Rating is already low or in the negative, different criteria and penalties may apply. You can check your current Personal Safety Rating directly through SGI.
