Halloween should be full of treats. Not barriers.

This year, Ontario Shipyards is proud to support Treat Accessibly, a Canadian movement making Halloween more inclusive for children of all abilities.

What began in 2017 with one family making trick-or-treating accessible for a child in their neighbourhood has grown into a movement reaching more than 300,000 homes across Canada.

And the idea couldn’t be simpler.

Move the treats to the end of your driveway or garage, removing stairs and other barriers that can prevent children from participating.

A small change that can make a big difference.

Pam has a toolbox full of tools that aren’t supposed to exist.
Some are bent. Others have been modified or welded together. Because when the tool she needs doesn’t exist, Pam makes one.
It’s one of the reasons millwrighting suits her. At Ontario Shipyards, the work demands precision, problem solving and the ability to figure out something you’ve never encountered before. Even after years of working on valves, Pam still comes across ones she’s never seen, and has to research how they work and how to overhaul them.
Long before she became a millwright, Pam was an artist. She still is.
And while steel and machinery may seem a long way from graffiti, cartooning and collage, the instinct is remarkably similar: understand what you’re looking at, imagine a solution and create something that wasn’t there before.
Turns out, Pam never stopped being an artist. She just found another way to create.

Some vessels carry passengers. Others carry generations of memories.

And this one has been doing both for more than 50 years.

The MS Chi-Cheemaun is now alongside at our Hamilton shipyard, where she’ll spend the winter undergoing scheduled maintenance.

The Chi-Cheemaun has become one of the Great Lakes’ most recognizable vessels, carrying passengers and vehicles between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island. With room for more than 600 passengers and approximately 150 vehicles, she’s much more than a ferry. She’s a vital connection between communities, a familiar sight on Georgian Bay and part of countless family journeys.

Her name carries a story of its own.

Chi-Cheemaun means “Big Canoe” in Ojibwe, a name given to the vessel in 1974 by Donald Keeshig of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. Her distinctive artwork also pays tribute to the artistic traditions and cultural heritage of the Anishinaabe people.

Over five decades, she’s carried millions of passengers, connected communities and become a beloved part of Ontario’s maritime history.

Now, as another sailing season comes to a close, our teams have the privilege of helping prepare her for the journeys still ahead.

Every transformation needs a before. This is ours.

Work is getting underway on a space at our Port Weller site that’s about to look very different.

With support from the Ontario Shipyard Grant Program (OSGP), we’re transforming the space into a dedicated hub for training, health, safety, security and environment, creating a place where our teams can learn, prepare and continue building the skills and practices that support the work happening across Ontario Shipyards.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll take you behind the scenes as the space changes, sharing progress along the way and, eventually, the finished result.

Sometimes you have to try a few things before you find the thing that fits.

Pam didn’t arrive at Ontario Shipyards with a background in the trades. Before the shipyard, she’d worked in restaurants, cleaning and nursing, and was ready for something completely different.

She started as a labourer with almost no experience using tools. “I didn’t even know what a crescent wrench was,” she laughs.
But she was curious. After watching the welders work, the artist in her thought, I think I could do that. She asked for a chance and soon found herself on the steel team.
From there, Pam discovered millwrighting, and found what she’d been looking for: variety, challenge and a trade where there’s always something new to learn. Ontario Shipyards supported her apprenticeship, training and schooling, and today she’s a certified millwright.
Her advice to anyone still figuring out their path is simple: “If there’s something that you wanna go get, go get.”
You don’t have to know your path from the beginning. You just have to recognize it when you find it.

Today is a day to listen, learn and remember.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Ontario Shipyards joins Canadians in honouring the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who continue to carry their legacy.

Reconciliation begins with truth, with taking the time to listen to Indigenous voices, understand our shared history and recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system.

Today, we encourage our team and our community to make space for reflection, learning and the ongoing work of reconciliation.
