It was the first major industrial reversal in Hamilton's history, and when the giant Studebaker plant closed down in 1966, it left 700 workers out of a job.

Studebaker moved to Hamilton in 1946, buying the old Bofors gun plant at Ferrie and Mars Avenue, with the first car rolling off the assembly line in 1948.

When the last car rolled off the line on St. Patrick's Day, 1966, the Hamilton plant had produced 179,325 cars and trucks.
