Can Electric Vehicles Overheat? The Answer May Surprise You.

At Blue Mountain AUTOPRO – NexDrive, one of the most common questions we hear is, "Do electric vehicles overheat?"

The answer is yes—but not in the same way as a gasoline-powered vehicle.

Electric vehicles rely on sophisticated thermal management systems to keep the high-voltage battery, electric drive unit (EDU), inverter, onboard charger, and other components operating within their designed temperature ranges. If these systems aren't properly maintained, overheating can lead to reduced performance, warning messages, limited charging speeds, or even component damage.

That's why routine maintenance is just as important for an EV as it is for a conventional vehicle.

During an EV inspection at Blue Mountain AUTOPRO – NexDrive, we inspect:
• Battery and power electronics cooling systems
• Coolant condition and level
• Electric Drive Unit (EDU)
• Brake system
• Steering and suspension
• Tires
• Charging system
• High-voltage components and much more

Preventative maintenance helps ensure your EV performs safely, efficiently, and reliably for years to come.

Don't Ignore Unusual Noises from Your EV – They Could Lead to Major Repairs!

Earlier this week, a 2019 Nissan Leaf with only 43,000 km arrived at Blue Mountain AUTOPRO – NexDrive with a significant noise while driving. After a comprehensive inspection, our technicians determined the source of the noise was the Electric Drive Unit (EDU), specifically the reduction gear assembly, which had suffered an internal failure.

The photos show the magnetic fill and drain plugs removed from the EDU. Both magnets were covered with metallic debris, and the EDU fluid was heavily contaminated. These magnetic plugs are designed to capture fine metal particles from normal wear, but excessive debris can indicate abnormal internal wear within the reduction gear assembly.

Like any other vehicle, electric vehicles require routine maintenance and inspections. At Blue Mountain AUTOPRO – NexDrive, we recommend an annual EV inspection that includes evaluating the condition of the EDU fluid, brake fluid, coolant systems, brakes, steering, suspension, tires, and other critical components.

While not every failure can be prevented, regular inspections and timely EDU fluid servicing can help identify abnormal wear early and may extend the service life of the reduction gear assembly, potentially preventing costly repairs.

If you own an electric vehicle, don't wait for warning lights or unusual noises. Schedule your annual EV inspection and help protect one of your vehicle's most important components.

Did You Know? Your Electric Vehicle Uses Regenerative Braking! ⚡🚗

One of the biggest advantages of driving an electric vehicle is regenerative braking.

When you lift your foot off the accelerator, your EV's electric motor works in reverse, slowing the vehicle while converting that energy back into electricity. Instead of being lost as heat like in a traditional braking system, that energy is sent back to the high-voltage battery to help extend your driving range.

Some of the benefits of regenerative braking include:
✔ Improved driving range
✔ Reduced brake pad and rotor wear
✔ Lower maintenance costs
✔ Increased energy efficiency
✔ A smoother driving experience

Although regenerative braking significantly reduces the use of your conventional brakes, it doesn't eliminate the need for regular brake maintenance. Because the friction brakes are used less often, brake components can develop rust or corrosion over time, especially in our West Coast climate. That's why we recommend an annual EV brake inspection and service to ensure everything continues operating safely and reliably.

At Blue Mountain AUTOPRO | NexDrive, we're proud to specialize in the maintenance and repair of electric vehicles. Whether it's brake service, cooling system maintenance, high-voltage diagnostics, or routine servicing, our trained technicians have the knowledge and equipment to keep your EV performing at its best.

Another EV serviced and back on the road! ⚡

Today, our team completed a brake service on this 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 with over 120,000 km on the odometer.

Although electric vehicles use regenerative braking to reduce brake wear, regular brake maintenance is still essential. Because the friction brakes are used less frequently, brake components can develop rust and corrosion over time, especially in our West Coast climate.

As part of today's service, we:
• Serviced the front and rear brake systems
• Cleaned and lubricated all brake hardware and sliding components
• Machined the front and rear brake rotors
• Performed a complete brake system inspection

Everything checked out great, and this ID.4 is ready for many more kilometres of safe and reliable driving.

Preventative maintenance is the key to maximizing the life of your EV's braking system while helping to avoid costly repairs in the future.

Whether you drive a Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Chevrolet, Ford, or another electric vehicle, Blue Mountain AUTOPRO | NexDrive has the specialized training, equipment, and expertise to keep your EV performing at its best.

❓ True or False: Running your A/C drains your battery?

✅ The answer depends on what you drive!

⚡ Electric Vehicles (EVs)
Yes. Your A/C is powered by the high-voltage battery, so it does reduce your driving range. The impact is usually small, but on very hot days the A/C works harder to cool the cabin, using more energy. Once the cabin reaches the desired temperature, power consumption drops significantly.

⛽ Gasoline Vehicles
Not exactly. The A/C compressor is powered by the engine, so it doesn't drain the battery while you're driving. Instead, it makes the engine work harder, which increases fuel consumption and can slightly reduce fuel economy.

The takeaway?
• EVs use a little more battery.
• Gas vehicles use a little more fuel.

Either way, staying comfortable comes with a small energy cost—but it's usually well worth it!

💡 EV Tip: If your vehicle has cabin pre-conditioning, cool it down while it's still plugged in. You'll use electricity from the charger instead of your battery, helping maximize your driving range.
