Client concern: A shake in the rear at any speed.

Cause: A broken belt in the right rear tire.

Correction: Tire replacement.

All jokes aside; this may have been due to a pot hole, or it also may have been due to the fact that the tire was manufactured in 2009. Tires are made of rubber, which naturally breaks down over time. The older a tire gets, the more likely a broken belt is to occur.

We’ve all heard the phrase: “Mechanics charge too much.” Sometimes it can feel that way from the outside, but often it’s simply a misunderstanding of what goes into running a professional automotive repair facility.

Operating a modern repair shop involves a significant investment. The tools pictured here alone represent between $25,000 and $30,000 worth of equipment, and that’s just a small portion of what’s required to properly service today’s vehicles. Add in specialty sockets, ratchets, wrenches, diagnostic equipment, and manufacturer-specific tools needed to perform even routine services.

Beyond tools, there are many other costs that allow a shop to operate at a professional level: maintaining a facility, hiring and retaining skilled technicians so your vehicle is repaired correctly the first time, subscribing to service information systems, keeping scan tools updated, and carrying the necessary insurance to protect both the business and its clients.

One of our bigger jobs recently is courtesy of Ford Motor Company.

The client came in concerned about what sounded like a serious engine knock. After thorough diagnostics and testing, we determined the noise was actually caused by a cracked flex plate (also known as a drive plate or flywheel, depending on the application).

That diagnosis meant the transmission had to come out. Once removed, we installed a new flex plate and, while we were in there, replaced the torque converter as preventative maintenance — a component known to fail on this particular model.

Another major repair completed properly and professionally, and another vehicle back on the road with confidence.
