Do you know if your Horse Float with a living area or permanent bed set up is Australian Compliant.

Today we see many horse trailers with living areas or horse trailers with a kitchenette at the front with a permanent bed above them.

Did you know that if the Caravan access door is NOT on the passenger side (kerb side) of the trailer it is technically non-compliant to Australian standards.

In Australia trailers
even horse floats must following the following rules.

According to the Australian Government's Vehicle Standards Bulletin 1 (VSB 1), any trailer built for living or sleeping must follow strict safety rules for its main door.

The three key rules for the external access door are:

1. Opening Direction- Outward-opening or sliding only: The door must not open inward. It must swing outward toward the outside of the trailer or slide open sideways. This rule ensures that if there is an emergency inside, occupants can easily push the door open to escape without it being blocked by internal items, furniture, or fallen objects

2. Door Location- Left-hand side or rear: At least one external door must be placed on the Left-hand (passenger) side or at the very rear of the trailer. It is illegal to have the only access door on the right-hand (driver) side, as this would force occupants to step out directly into oncoming traffic when parked on the side of a road.

3. Proper Entry and Exit Function - Direct access: The door on the left or rear must function as a true door in the normal sense. It must provide direct entry to and exit from the living space.

Plus did you know That a rear ramp that cannot be unlatched from the inside absolutely does not count as a legal exit under the Vehicle Standards Bulletin 1 (VSB 1) rule. - Many builders will try and claim this is a valid exit.

Before making your next purchase decision check out the location of the access door to the living area and make sure it is in the right location.
