Throwback to where it all started... 🔧
Found this old photo of my son helping me work on an engine.

Back then the spanners were almost bigger than he was, but he was determined to get involved. It's amazing how quickly the years go by.

One of the best parts of being a mechanic isn't just fixing vehicles—it's being able to share what you love with your kids and watch their curiosity grow.

Not sure how much work actually got done that day, but the smiles made it worth it. 😊

I’ve been working on Mercedes vehicles for a long time now… but not quite as long as this one.

This incredible old girl rolled into the dealership about 13 years ago.
Built in 1959, one owner from new, and still out on the road doing what it was built to do.

You can spend years plugged into dealer diagnostic computers, working on the latest technology, coding modules and chasing CAN faults… then something like this turns up and reminds you where it all started.

No touchscreens.
No AdBlue.
No fault codes.
Just simple engineering and character you don’t see anymore.

And all it came in for was an ignition switch. Which we had on the shelf 🤯

Pretty special seeing a piece of Mercedes history still being used and enjoyed over 60 years later.

This vehicle was serviced elsewhere only around 1,500km ago by a well-known “van specialist”.

Customer came to me because they’d already lost confidence in the previous service and wanted a second opinion. I carried out a quick free inspection and immediately found enough concerns to book it back in for a proper check over.

Found:

• Excessive play in the tie rod
• Rear shock absorber bolt completely missing
• Worn shock absorbers
• Anti-roll bar bushes worn out
• Tailshaft centre bearing splitting apart

One of the photos shows the shock absorber hanging there with no mounting bolt fitted at all. That’s not something that suddenly appeared in 1,500km.

This is why proper inspections matter. Anyone can change oil and reset a service light. Actually checking the vehicle properly is what keeps customers safe and prevents bigger failures later on.

Always worth finding someone who takes the time to inspect the vehicle, not just process it through the workshop.

Which is a shame because I use to recommend this workshop to customers when I was too busy. But since the new owners took over its had a bad name 😞

Sometimes the biggest problems are the things customers weren’t even booked in for.

First job came in for tie rods and tie rod ends after another workshop said they couldn’t do the repair. While carrying out the work I noticed something didn’t look right with the brakes.

The brake pads had been replaced recently… but instead of fitting a new brake wear sensor, the old one had simply been bypassed. Warning light gone, problem hidden.

Second job was a rear brake and axle oil leak repair another mechanic had supposedly already done. A day later the customer lost the handbrake.

Pulled it apart to find the handbrake adjusters had failed previously, so instead of repairing it properly the shoes had just been removed completely because the mechanic “couldn’t get the parts”. The photo was taken right after I removed the disc

To make it worse, the original oil leak repair hadn’t actually been fixed either because the hub seal still hadn’t been replaced.

This is why recommendations and genuine customer reviews matter.

Finding a mechanic through word of mouth or honest reviews can save a lot of stress, money and unsafe repairs later on.

Anyone can fit parts. Doing the job properly, checking the work thoroughly and standing behind the repair is what matters.

If you’ve had work done by PWR Car & Commercial, reviews and recommendations genuinely help small businesses like mine continue to grow — and help other people know who they can trust with their vehicles.

Customers travelling from Bunbury to Baldivis for servicing and repairs is something I never take for granted.

John drops his Sprinter off, borrows one of the loan vehicles, then heads back once the work is done.

Keeping customers on the road is one thing.
Making the whole process easier is just as important.

Really appreciate the continued support John 👍

Good feedback never gets old.

Graeme was a new customer to PWR Car & Commercial and trusted me with his Sprinter after hearing about my work through the community.

A lot of people can change parts.
What matters is understanding the vehicle properly, explaining things clearly, and doing the job right the first time.

Comments like this mean a lot when you run your own business.

Every vehicle I work on belongs to someone who depends on it, and that trust isn’t taken lightly.

Appreciate the support Graeme

Not the conversation you want to have…

Usually it’s found it, fixed it, you’re good to go.

This one went the other way.
Quick compression test on the computer showed something wasn’t right — cylinder imbalance straight away.

Dug deeper, removed injectors 3 & 4 to inspect…

That’s when it showed itself.

Hole in the piston.

No quick fix here. No sensor, no simple repair — internal engine damage.

Customer was right there when we found it… never an easy one to deliver.

But this is why proper diagnosis matters — no guessing, no throwing parts at it.

Straight answer so they can make the right call.

Check the comments for the damage :(

Another one in for a lighting upgrade.

This time adding front grille lights along with fog lights to improve visibility and give the front end a cleaner, more functional setup.

Wired in properly with correct switching and integration — not just thrown in.

Nice clean finish and a noticeable difference out on the road

Fuel isn’t cheap at the moment… so the last thing you want is it leaking out.

Had this Vito in with a damaged fuel tank that had started to leak. Left like that, it doesn’t just waste fuel — it’s a safety issue as well.

Removed the tank and replaced it, then checked everything over to make sure the system was sealed properly.

Back on the road with no leaks and no wasted fuel

A/C not working… even in the middle of autumn.

This one came through the Arctick website — which is exactly why being Arctick licensed matters.

Refrigerant handled correctly, and the job done to the proper standard.

No cold air at all on this one. Compressor had failed, so the system wasn’t doing anything.
Compressor replaced, then front end stripped down to replace the receiver drier. System resealed, pressure tested and regassed properly.

Back to proper cold air again.

A lot of people stop using their A/C this time of year — but that’s when you should be running it.

Keeps everything lubricated, stops seals drying out, and helps avoid bigger repairs later.

Use it now, not just when you need it.
