I often get the opportunity to try out new tools and when Dspiae reached out to me and announced their new brand GEE Hobby, I quickly jumped on the range and ordered all of the brands first releases for my store. I was sent some samples as part of the order and thought I’d unbox and try out their Hobby Vise.
The Vise comes in a nicely presented and very sturdy box, with the tool in machined stainless steel and aluminium with a white ceramic feel base. It includes 6 metal pegs and silicone covers that fit into the top of the vise for additional grip. It also comes with something you never thought you would need but do now, being an injection molded 1/3 scale model of the vise and a dice that you can store the model in!. The rest of the range also come with these replicas and an additional ‘toy’. This small distraction/oddity aside, the vise is a very capable tool and worthwhile addition to the modelling bench.
The vise easily fits and holds a jar of of Tamiya paint with expansion for larger items and the knurled k**b on the base of the tool allows free movement up to 90 degrees down. The heavy base makes this tool very sturdy and reliable and at its extreme extension has almost zero play. One jaw of the vise has precisely machined grooves in the horizontal and vertical allowing round shapes such as rod and bar to be held firmly whilst being worked on. The base of the vise has a small magnetic storage area for the 6 metal pins to keep them safe when not being used. The base measures 80mm x 80mm and advertised weight is 360 Grams which was right on what my scales said it was.
Overall, I am extremely impressed with the vise, and can see it being a ‘regular’ amongst my modelling tool collection. The rest of the range looks to be very promising and I will review them when time permits.
