LET DOCTORS DO THEIR JOB. LET PATIENTS HAVE THE CHOICE.

This is the ad we ran today in the NT News in collaboration with the Northern Territory Voluntary Euthanasia Society (NTVES):

Imagine if your doctor couldn't tell you about ALL the options for your medical condition? Silenced from doing the job we are trusting them with?

That's what the proposed NT voluntary assisted dying (VAD) law would do. Its 'gag clause' prevents doctors from raising VAD as an end-of-life choice unless the patient asks first.

But what if you don't know it's an option? Or the right words to say?

How can you make an informed choice if you're not given all the information?

Banning doctors from explaining all options is not a safeguard. It undermines patient-centred care.

That's why other states do not have a gag clause or plan to scrap it, and the NT government's own experts recommended against one. As they did the proposed 12-month-till-death timeline.

Prognosis for complex, terminal conditions is not an exact science. A fixed 12-month limit excludes many terminally ill people who are suffering intolerably.

The government has still not explained why these two elements are in the Bill.
